You might not assume there’s a huge overlap between drag and fighting games. One involves dressing up to express extreme caricatures of gender expectations that’s associated with LGBTQ+ culture; the other involves knocking seven shades out of each other with hyper-violent adrenaline and where busty female characters are often designed for the gaze of pubescent boys. But perhaps fighting games, with their larger-than-life flamboyant rosters, are actually more drag than you think.

“Fighting games are so known for these really hyper-feminized versions of women or hyper-masculine versions of men, so it kind of plays with gender in ways that you didn’t really think of,” says Jessica Antenorcruz, narrative designer at Fighting Chance Games. “So it makes total sense to me when we talk to a lot of drag queens or kings, they look up to fighting game characters as being very dramatic and beautiful — and then kick the crap out of them!”

But even if the LGBTQ+ community may embrace Mortal Kombat’s Sindel, who uses both her voice and hair as weapons, as a drag icon, much of that has been dependent on the audience projecting their interpretation of any scant queer-coded signifiers available. And while queer representation has been gradually improving in mainstream gaming, from Ellie in The Last of Us to the bisexual paradise of Hades, these are still games led primarily by cis-hetero men.

Drag Her, in comparison, doesn’t hide the fact that it is proudly camp and queer. It’s a 2D fighting game featuring a cast entirely of drag performers, while the core of the new indie studio behind it, Fighting Chance Games, is comprised of LGBTQ+ folk, women, and people of color, with a deep love for the drag community. More importantly, the fighters aren’t just drag characters (with the exception of Lemonade, a prototype Dolly Parton-esque country queen designed for the demo). Instead, each will be based on and voiced by real-life drag artists, many of which fans may recognize from RuPaul’s Drag Race or The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula.

This decision, according to the game’s art director Josie Devora, stemmed from the origins of the project when the pandemic had forced many queer businesses to close. “We wanted to combine our love for games and then something that would actually help support the community and kind of start a new revenue for it as well,” he says. “That’s what inspired Drag Her — it was a way to get the community involved while having a really fast, fun, frenetic game at the same time.”

Drag might not be typically associated with violence, but battles are certainly part of drag culture, be it lip sync battles or ball culture’s verbal battles of wits, where “reading” and “dragging” an opponent is parlance for tearing someone down. Drag Her simply makes this literal. “It’s like dragging someone through the mud, but then they’re also in drag, so it sells the concept but also politely lets you beat the shit out of your friends,” Devora laughs. “We’re coming from a place where we’re definitely huge drag fans, but also we’re huge fighting game fans — it doesn’t make sense why nobody’s done this before!”

“It doesn’t make sense why nobody’s done this before”

Based on an early build I played, Drag Her really does bring the glitter and glamour of drag culture to the fighting stage with a cheeky dose of irreverence. Each fighter’s health gauge is represented by a long and gradually shrinking pink baton of lipstick. Their attacks are as distinct as striking a voguing pose, while super moves leave a rainbow trail or cut away to over-the-top magical girl-style animations. With just one playable queen in the demo, the ensuing mirror matches also provide an opportunity for the announcer (voiced with sassy relish by drag queen Meatball) crack about the two showing up in the same outfit (“how embarrassing!”) while defeated fighters fall to the shrill cry of “K-HO!”

In a word, it looks fabulous, and it’s fun to play, too. Producer Ian Ramsay says that the aim is to appeal to the intersection of casual fighting game players and casual Drag Race fans, which Drag Her does with a simplified control scheme — just two primary attack buttons, an assist attack a la Marvel vs. Capcom, which brings on another drag fighter, and no quarter or half-circle directional inputs. “The core concept when I sold this to the team was fast and frenetic and approachable,” he explains. “We’re not trying to create a Divekick one-button fighter either, so we picked a bunch of different fighting games along a continuum of where they were with complexity to find the core for our game.”

Another thing Ramsay says the team agreed on was “consequence-free violence.” Along with the colorful hand-drawn art style, matches have a very playful no-harm-done tone where no one’s leaving the stage physically battered, wigs remain immaculately pinned to their heads, and even the winner’s usual victory pose ends with a dip that has them comically crashing through the floor. Even as someone whose favorite fighting game happens to be the ultra-violent Mortal Kombat where fighters are regularly impaled, disemboweled, or in pieces, Antenocruz is emphatic about this.

“This is a community of people who have been abused for years and years and traumatized, so we wanted to make a game that’s kind of harmless in the sense that you’d beat the crap out of somebody, but it’s all a game, right?” she says. “You’re never going to see them bleeding or bruised because that can be demeaning and traumatizing to people who have lived through that. It’s like the opposite of Mortal Kombat — it’s kind of a weird safe space.”

Drag Her is also doing right by the drag community by representing it as diversely as possible. The planned roster of eight fighters may seem slim — basically the same as the original Street Fighter II lineup — but it’s comprised of a wide range of drag artists. These include drag king Landon Cider, Korean drag queen Kim Chi, and trans drag queen Laganja Estranja. While Drag Race has often been criticized for dragging its heels on inclusivity, having only featured transgender contestants in recent years but still no drag kings, Fighting Chance Games wants to show that all drag is valid.

“Drag artists are the mascots of not just the G of LGBTQ, or the L, or the Q — it’s a celebration of it all,” says Ramsay. “For me, drag is just putting on a show and a personality, whether it’s to help defend yourself because the world has really picked on you since you were a kid or whether it’s a celebration of everything you are or want to be.”

That’s also why it was important to represent real-life drag artists, who are, of course, paid for their license, not only giving them exposure to drag fans but new audiences. While the team is unable to disclose details at present, part of the game will include elements that provide more background about the drag community and the drag artists; a mixture of education, trivia, and celebration, but above all, a reminder that these are all real human beings.

“It’s like the opposite of Mortal Kombat — it’s kind of a weird safe space.”

Nonetheless, the main aim of Drag Her is to deliver a fun fighting game, which also happens to be very camp and queer. But it faces stiff competition in a year when Street Fighter is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a surely imminent announcement for its sixth installment, while new challenger Riot Games is investing millions into the Arcane-inspired Project L. Of course, the studio understands that it’s very much a niche within a niche (even the game’s announcement trailer references obscure ’90s fighting game ClayFighter). Having designed two indie-level fighting games in the past, technical designer Matt DeLucas is naturally keeping expectations in check, especially when it comes to attracting the professional stratosphere of the fighting game community.

“It’s really hard to tap that one because, for some of them, it’s a job, like they’re making thousands of dollars for every tournament, or it’s supporting a side hustle,” he says. “We’re trying to tap the more indie casual side, where they’re still playing the Sailor Moon fighting game on Super Nintendo. At the end of the day, it’s all about marketing, but we’re shooting for the LGBTQ+ and core fighting game overlap more than hardcore tournament goers.”

With a Kickstarter funding target of $69,000, it’s certainly a (nice) modest target to see whether both the drag and queer community and fighting game community will show up and, more importantly, whether publishers will step up. “One of the things I would love to implore is all of these traditional publishers that are talking a lot about diversity and all the things that they want to support, give people the chance to actually show you that those things can deliver,” says Antenorcruz. “We’re a very diverse team. First and foremost, we’re making a diverse game in a lot of different arenas, so take the chance and be about the thing that you’re talking about.”

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil Village will be getting downloadable content. The news was revealed during an E3 2021 Showcase that was short of new announcements. A quick message during the livestream confirmed that DLC has entered production “by popular demand.”

While there were no more details beyond this, the implication is that we could be getting more content featuring the game’s most popular character, Lady Dimitrescu. Another possibility could be the return of fan-favorite Ada Wong, who was originally planned to feature in Resident Evil Village, as revealed via early concept art that can be unlocked in the game. Of course, it could be a while before this additional DLC comes out, as it appears there had been no plans ahead of the game’s release, whereas Resident Evil 7 already had a season pass planned for launch.

It was also confirmed that online multiplayer game Resident Evil RE:Verse will be releasing next month, and is free for everyone who has purchased Resident Evil Village.

Ahead of the Capcom E3 2021 Showcase, the publisher had said it would be focusing on updates on Resident Evil Village, Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. And, true to its word, that’s exactly what we got. Nonetheless, it provided another emotionally charged story trailer for Monster Hunter Stories 2, and also confirmed that it will be getting free trial demo coming on June 25th. Players will also be able to carry save progress over to the full game when it launched on July 9th.

The second day of E3 2021 has been busy with Xbox and Bethesda’s joint conference followed by Square Enix’s showcase, but plenty more game announcements came from the PC Gaming Show. If you don’t have time to catch up on the whole 90 minutes, we’ve rounded up a few of our highlights of intriguing and upcoming games that you’ll want to wishlist on Steam.

Rawmen

Basically Splatoon but with food, Rawmen is a third-person arena shooter where instead of guns, you fight with food against up to two to eight players. Sling soup at your opponents, become a human meatball by jumping into meat juice and rolling your way back home, or launch yourself in the air with doughnut bombs.

They Always Run

This space Western 2D action game sees you playing a three-armed mutant hunting dangerous bounties across the galaxy. From the visuals, the animation, the music, it’s just dripping with style, and plenty of ultra-violence as you hack and slash your way through each level.

Far: Changing Tides

Far: Lone Sails was a minimal, lonely, but powerfully meditative experience as you charted journey across a post-apocalyptic environment with nothing but yourself and a unique hunk of a junk of a vehicle. So a sequel, Far: Changing Tides comes as a lovely surprise. It looks even more beautiful, and this time you’re piloting a ship across a flooded world, while still trying to keep your machine moving forward by salvaging ship parts during your travels.

Next Space Rebels

A space rocket-building sim with a narrative, Next Space Rebels has the feel of a DIY amateur’s Kerbal Space Program, as you try to put together a rocket engine that can actually launch. Tied to this simulation however is a story conveyed through FMV cutscenes, as fictitious hacker group Next Space Rebels urge the global community to build and launch rockets themselves, and “democratize the universe.”

Soulstice

The name may imply a shameless Souls clone, but Italian developer Reply Game Studios is also taking inspiration from Japanese character-action games like Devil May Cry, as well as early ‘80s anime. Another influence may be PlatinumGames’ Astral Chain, as you’re controlling two characters simultaneously; two sisters called Briar and Lute, one possessing superhuman strength, the other a ghost with mystical powers.

Lemnis Gate

This turn-based time-looping first-person shooter tasks you to take control of each of your team members one at a time playing a round that lasts just 25 seconds. It was first announced last year but its release is just around the corner as the latest trailer has confirmed Lemnis Gate is coming on August 3rd to PC, as well as PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. An open beta is also coming in July, so players can get their heads around just how this time-bending gameplay works.

Previously announced for Marvel’s Avengers, today’s Square Enix E3 Showcase gave a first proper look at Black Panther who joins the superhero roster in a brand new expansion, War For Wakanda.

A new cinematic trailer introduces the King of Wakanda himself — although his face is not shown clearly until he puts on his Black Panther mask. He will be defending Wakanda from Klaw, who has infiltrated Wakanda in order to steal Vibranium for his own plans.

The trailer page indicates that War For Wakanda will release this August. The Black Panther expansion will be free to players who already own Marvel’s Avengers on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. The expansion had supposedly been planned for release earlier but was delayed due to the sad and sudden passing of Chadwick Boseman, who played the superhero in the Marvel film.

Babylon’s Fall finally has a substantial gameplay trailer, which was revealed at Square Enix’s E3 2021 Showcase. The new trailer is the first time it’s been seen since the game was first announced in 2018. Players will team up tackling challenging dungeons in an attempt to scale the titular tower.

The co-op title is developed by PlatinumGames and can be played solo or with up to four players. Besides the studio’s trademark hi-octane melee action, the new footage from the fantasy title shows that players can wield ranged weapons like magic staffs and bows. Their powers and customization is also based on a special equipment called the Gideon Coffin worn on their backs.

The developers confirmed that Babylon’s Fall is a live-service title that will feature a range of post launch game modes at no additional cost. Sign-ups are also taking place for a closed beta, which you can register via the official website.

Babylon’s Fall was first announced at Square Enix’s E3 conference in 2018, where it was confirmed for PS4 and PC. Little else has been heard about the game, apart from another teaser over a year later, while PlatinumGames assured fans last year that the game was still in development. The game is now also coming to PS5.

The new Game Pass titles were announced during Microsoft and Bethesda’s joint E3 conference on Sunday. The lion’s share comes from Bethesda, which adds 10 more titles to the service, in addition to the 20 Bethesda titles added to the service since it was acquired by Microsoft earlier this year. Six of these titles will also be accessible via Xbox, PC, and xCloud. PC players will also have access to Fallout: New Vegas starting today.

In addition, Yakuza: Like A Dragon has also been added to Xbox Game Pass, which is available today. The entire mainline Yakuza series is also already available on the service.

Here’s the full list of newly announced Xbox Game Pass games:

Arx Fatalis (PC)

Fallout (PC)

Fallout 2 (PC)

Fallout: Tactics (PC)

Fallout 3 (console, PC, Cloud)

Fallout: New Vegas (PC)

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (console, PC, Cloud)

The Evil Within 2 (console, PC, Cloud)

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (console, PC, Cloud)

RAGE (console, PC, Cloud)

Doom (2016) (console, Cloud)

Yakuza: Like A Dragon (console, PC, Cloud)

Upload VR returned to E3 with its third annual showcase of the most inventive and intriguing games coming to VR. As the medium continues to mature year after year, it continues to be a platform for developers to innovate. While not all of the games shown were brand new announcements, we picked five of our favorites from the showcase that you can look forward to immersing yourself in soon.

Song in the Smoke

First announced for PSVR earlier this year, Song in the Smoke is a VR survival game and a departure for developer 17-Bit, better known for cartoony indie games like Skulls of the Shogun and Galak-Z. In a new developer diary, studio CEO Jake Kazdal explains how VR made him want to create not just a game but a fully living and breathing world. It’s coming to Oculus Rift and Quest, and PSVR, this summer.

Unplugged

VR is home to many terrific rhythm games, but Unplugged may have the coolest hook. It’s a game about playing air guitar, and by that, it means you really do only play with your hands thanks to hand-tracking technology on Quest and other supported PC VR. Better yet, the new trailer shows you can play The Offspring’s ‘The Kids Aren’t Alright.’ It’s coming this fall.

Nerf Ultimate Championship

Who remembers playing Nerf? The reveal trailer admittedly doesn’t give too much away but it looks stylish, those Nerf guns look terrific, and it’s from Emmy-awarding winning VR studio Secret Location. It’s an Oculus exclusive coming in 2022.

Sushi Ben VR

This stylish cel-shaded game sees you trying to save your favorite sushi bar from going out of business. However, instead of serving up sushi, your task is actually to convince other people to come eat there, so there’s much more of a narrative focus, brought to life with some vibrant manga-style comic book panels. It’s coming in 2022.

A Township Tale

Coming to Oculus Quest on July 15th, A Township Tale is an open world RPG designed specifically for VR, which wonderfully acknowledges how you and everyone else don’t have any legs. You’ll be able to forge a new identity, whether as a blacksmith, minter, woodcutter, warrior or archer, in an immersive fantasy world.

Devolver Digital made its return to E3 with another no-holds-barred satirical swipe at the games industry, taking shots at subscriptions, games as a service, and even NFTs. Dubbed the Devolver MaxPass Plus — “the new era of monetization as a service” — the spoof showcase features the infamous Devolver executive Nina Struthers and her cohorts extolling the ridiculous virtues of its new service.

But besides being the most irreverently entertaining segment of E3 (so far), the publisher also included some new game announcements. Here are the most notable:

Trek to Yomi

The first of these was the cinematic Trek to Yomi, with a trailer that’s refreshingly not actually a pre-rendered cinematic. The black-and-white game follows a young samurai who is sworn to protect his town and the people he loves against all threats. The game is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One in 2022.

Wizard with a Gun

Wizard with a Gun lives up to its title as an online co-op sandbox survival game where you face dangerous creatures armed with magic and guns. It’s coming to PC and consoles in 2022.

Inscryption

Inscryption comes from the creator of Pony Island and The Hex, which combines deckbuilding with roguelike mechanics, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror. It’s coming to PC later this year.

Devolver Tumble Time

Despite the satirical trailer, Devolver Tumble Time is actually a real physics-based puzzle game featuring a roster of characters from Devolver Games. It’s a free game coming to mobile, although there will probably be ads to watch, because nothing is ever really free.

Demon Throttle

Demon Throttle is an 8-bit game from developer Doinksoft, the creators of Gato Roboto. Besides its old-school gameplay, what makes this title stand out that it’s not only a Nintendo Switch exclusive, it’s a completely physical-only release from Special Reserve Games.
