With the rise of NFT artwork over the past year, many artists have floated my way through the Twitter content rivers. One of those people was Defaced, whose colorful, geometric designs always transport me to an alternate dimension and draw me in with characters that I can’t help but feel for.

Defaced, like many digital artists, got his start in graphic design, initially developing his skills making branding packages for Call of Duty streamers and eventually getting a job out of high school for a small tech company. He quickly realized that if he wanted his time sitting behind a computer to mean something, he’d have to make a change. After a quick stint back in school, he jumped into the world of freelance design. A bet that paid off, as within the year he’d be working for the likes of Apple and Namco. His freedom then allowed him an early shot at the NFT market, which in time would give him the money to invest back into his art and fuel his next big project.

I talked with him about the development of his style, his thoughts on NFTs, and what inspires his work.

Tell me a bit about Starman. What went into making this character? What does it mean to you?

Starmaker is the name of the project in its totality. Starman came about whilst creating a piece in Cinema4D. I designed the character in hopes to initially create a memorable silhouette, it later became a recurring element in a lot of my work.

As I continued to create more work, I found myself using Starman more and more as a reflection of myself a lot of time. The character was heavily inspired by the works of Jim Henson and Shigeru Miyamoto. Starman’s meaning will grow to reflect my development, but at present Starman is meant to encapsulate the contrast between childhood, the creative process, and the fear of the unknown.

How would you describe your relationship with your own art, if you had to describe what it’s like? This is one of the more experimental questions I’m trying out.

Love / hate I think is the main one, because I try and do a piece daily. Some days you’re like, “I’m going to take the day off.” So like a couple of days ago, I saw my mates all day, then I came in, I was like, “Well, I might as well just spend an hour trying to make something.” Then it’s either the best hour of your life, where it all comes together seamlessly, or you’re banging your head against a wall and it’s just shit, everything looks shit, I’m a crap designer, I can’t put anything together.

When you get into that, I suppose it’s a sort of semi-flow state where everything sort of slots together nicely, and especially my style is quite heavily shape-based. It’s almost like Lego how it’d all click together. You’re following the instructions, and it’s all like bang bang bang — that’s a great feeling. When you’re sitting there for two hours looking at references and you’re just like, “What the fuck should I make?” and you’re searching for ideas, that’s where I struggle.

When did you start that daily practice, and how has it worked out for you?

For a couple of months now, I’ve been really consistent. I remember last year when I was coming back from France and I was trying to get fucking Wi-Fi to post something, so it’s definitely been a year of trying to be as consistent as I can really and hold myself accountable.

I think just pushing through it on a daily basis sharpens your toolkit. Like if you’re a plumber, you can’t just turn up to work and go, “I don’t really know what to fucking do, I can’t fix this toilet today.” It’s like you’ve got to fucking do it, you’ve just got to make something, just do something. Even if it’s shit, and you put it online and someone will go, “Oh, that’s fucking cool.”

When do you have the most fun making your work?

I think it’s when you sort of get into that flow and everything comes together and it feels easy, almost like you’re not even trying. That’s probably the most fun part. Then at the end, I really like seeing people’s responses to it. Art in itself is quite selfish, how much time you have to spend alone, and it’s just all about you. So when people can enjoy that, that’s satisfying.

When you pull back, what’s your favorite way to relax and unwind and gain inspiration? Or they don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

I like playing Xbox and stuff, but it’s just seeing my friends or my girlfriend and going out for a meal and chatting. There are no fucking screens there, you’re just conversing or exchanging ideas and chatting. It just sort of switches you off and gets you into a different mind space because when the thing you love is tied in with your career and it’s tied in with your finances and social media, and when you’re on your own, it’s quite daunting just reading Twitter or something.

Because the NFT market is on top of the crypto market, on days like yesterday when the market went to fucking shit big time, you can see people really fucking scared. You’re just taking in too much, you can’t process that many opinions. When everything’s tied up into a big knotted ball, you’ve just got to put it to one side and go have a fucking burger or something. You realize it’s not the be-all end-all, like we live on a fucking floating rock in space. It’s like whatever happens, fucking happens really, at the end of the day. It’s alright, nothing’s going to happen to you that badly which can’t be figured out.

What’s your experience of NFT’s been?

I think I sold my first NFT on September 30th last year. I think one ETH was £300 or $500 USD, something like that, so I was like, “Oh, that’s good money.” Then I just thought, “Okay, I’ll just mint five other things just straight off the bat,” and I was like, “Oh, these aren’t selling like the last one.” I had no idea about the sort of scarcity idea, and I didn’t have any fucking clue about that, so that’s been a learning curve and adjusting my brain to analyze the market, analyze the business approach, and supply and demand and what makes stuff valuable, what doesn’t.

Now I have been able to make some ETH, I’ve been able to put it aside and invest into a bigger project and make something cooler, and hire people to make stuff I can’t do, like 3D modeling or like a dev or some more artists to work on something, sort of building a team and go, “Okay, we’re going to go fucking big on this one.” I think as more artists figure this out and put two and two together, I think there’ll be bigger projects and there will almost be like events, and you’ll have artist events.

The main thing for me is having a financial incentive to pursue a career in art, wherever that may lead and whatever opportunities you get from that, and however long it lasts, just making the most of it and being able to make good money doing something which you fucking enjoy. That’s like my top pillar stone, because my dad lost his job due to COVID last year, and that puts things into perspective. People can complain all they want about the carbon footprint, but there are people in Brazil who I know who lived in not great condition and they’ve been able to get into better conditions, and some artists I know who come from abusive households have been able to get out and save themselves.

Are there any core inspirations or some things that hold a special place in your heart?

Yeah, definitely. I think Mario, that’s probably one of my top ones, and Shigeru Miyamoto and design philosophy, and all of the characters from Mario and their design. How they’ve withstood time, that’s like one of my top ones, and game mechanics and just bashing the fundamentals into it. The simplicity as well. All of that shit just shakes about in my head. Jim Henson as well, the Muppets and Sesame Street and that sort of design philosophy, and even how he was as a guy and what he wanted to teach kids.	I think the two are big influences on how I want to make stuff. Kaws and Murakami are inspirations as well.

You mentioned Henson as an inspiration, and I saw you on set (in a white bodysuit!) with Starman. What was that experience like? How has Henson impacted you and your work?

The experience was surreal, the day was intense but overall a great memory. I felt like an imposter at times as all of the people making it happen were all there just for me and my art.

Henson is one of the most overlooked artists in my eyes, the amount of people he has reached through his characters and storytelling is nothing short of impressive. To me, he represents pure creativity and vision. He has impacted my work by demonstrating how following an idea to its end can be potentially not just impactful on you but many others.

Can you give us a hint of what’s next for Starmaker? I saw someone say it’s the next Mario, which bodes well for following your inspiration. I’ve already seen artists make their own pieces of him. Seems like he’s already striking a chord.

Next for Starmaker will be actually dropping the first NFTs on SuperRare as my genesis drop on there. I’ll be dropping two short films including 3D animation and scenes from the studio. One of the NFTs will be accompanied by an arcade game, the collector who wins this will then have the choice to release the game publicly. Both NFTs will have a box of physicals exclusive to each NFT, including an art book, vinyl disc, bronze figure, and comic book.

What role do NFTs play in this mission?

NFTs are the key that unlocks the door. Without NFTs, this wouldn’t even exist as a possible career path. Try finding a job where you can direct films, create games, make artwork, supervise the manufacturing, and at the crux of it create worlds from your imagination — that job doesn’t exist without NFTs.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists have had their mediums closed off to them. With the limitations set on production teams and the complex logistics of getting back on set, some artists have had to find new ways to express themselves — like Karl Poyzer, a director of photography who took the time during the pandemic to dive into 3D artwork in Blender, with the goal of having fun and doing things his own way. This track would not only allow him to develop a fan base and fresh style but also to start a short film series, Floaters, that won a Vimeo Staff pick due to its amazing visuals, efficient storytelling, and — most importantly — its British humor.

I got to chat with Poyzer about his journey of getting started in 3D, the development of Floaters, and his tips for getting started in 3D art.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

Take me to the beginning. How did you get started?

As a kid, I was hugely into sci-fi and Star Trek and Star Wars. And as I was growing up, I was a little bit more of a polymath in terms of stuff that I did, like making music, how you play music, writing, and stuff like that. And then yeah, went to university and started film and then got into cinematography. And the thing for the next 10 years, it was just specializing in one creative outlet, which was a lot of fun. And it was really great, but that interest in sci-fi was always there and the storytelling element of it.

So tell me about your move into 3D. Did being a director of photography contribute to your exploration of this new medium?

I think what’s been interesting is I was quite scared, as I started spending more time on 3D, that I wouldn’t be taken as seriously. We have a problem in the UK with people hyphenating their job roles. I don’t think this is bad in the US, but we get quite snobby about life. When people do multiple things, they can’t be doing any of them seriously. So I was quite worried about how directors see me and that I would not be taken seriously as a cinematographer, whereas I found my following has increased tenfold really. And I’ve got a lot of new relationships with new directors through doing this.

“If you leave the story out, you allow the people who are looking at the art to have some of that story.”

I think the photography side of things gave me an advantage when it came to learning 3D because the lights work basically in the same way, but they are a lot cheaper. You don’t need to pay a crew overtime, and you’re not doing night shoots and all that. I think the thing that keeps me coming back to it, it’s just like that experimentation of those kinds of things and the storytelling of it. I’m not trying to be a full-time artist necessarily, so showing off art skills is something that I’m not bothered about. I’m more interested in whether a piece of art evokes some sort of story, whether it feels like there’s a story there or not. It was really nice when I first started putting stuff out when people were writing little bits of micro fiction and stuff like that. I’ve succeeded if it makes people feel like there’s room in there for them to put their own story.

Damn. That’s the dream. I can imagine that’s such a great feeling. People were just building out the world a little bit for you, and you’ve succeeded in giving them the bits that just spark something.

Yeah. I think there were loads of great artists out there who do work, that you can see the story, that where there are people doing things. There are things moving in specific directions or things blowing up and exploding, and the story’s all there and it looks amazing. And then there are us who do less of that. And my feeling is like my favorite artists are the ones whose landscapes are almost devoid of people. My goal is to allow people to be the people in those pictures. So I think that if you leave the story out, you allow the people who are looking at the art to have some of that story.

I wanted to ask a question about this. I read your Medium post on greebles [bits of details on larger objects that make them appear more complex]. So I definitely want to ask a question where you could just rant about them!

Yeah, it’s exactly the same. I think people could maybe mistake my rant about greebles as a love of little things attached to spaceships, and it isn’t so much that. I think what I was trying to say was that putting things into your world, be them little bits of things sticking to the side of your spaceship to make it look more detailed or bits of story, I think they serve the same purpose. Is there a correlation between smoother spaceships and lesser stories? I don’t know, maybe. But I think in the ’70s and ’80s, you relied on that stuff a little bit more because you couldn’t just computer generate it. You couldn’t just show it, that things were a lot more difficult to do.

“I tend to not go in with a plan.”

I think that limitation bred the need to expand your universe’s reach cheaply, and the cheapest way to do that normally was just have your character say something or allude to something that you don’t necessarily have to explore. Like the Kessel Run or the attack ships on fire from Blade Runner and stuff like that and the space jockey. There were all these nice little things, a lot of which have now sort of been explored and shown to us and they’re not ours anymore. It’s a shame really, nothing that they could have put on-screen would have been weirder than the sort of weird abstract thoughts that everyone had about what the space jockeys were.

I think it was such a beautiful thing that we got to have a little bit of ownership of, we were trusted with. It’s a shame that there isn’t more of that. I miss the strangeness, the lack of logic. And I think it’s why when people ask me what things do in my pieces, my answer is always, “That’s yours.”

So when you make a piece, what’s the guiding light as you assemble things?

I would say like 80 percent of what I make, I go in without a plan. I think the work I’m happiest with is work where I’ve gone in without a plan because it’s normally the strangest. It’s not always the case. Sometimes, especially if I’m working on Floaters, I’ll have to make a thing that’s a specific thing to do a specific thing. But yeah, with the art, the surrealism of it, I think I tend to not go in with a plan. And then at that point, it’s just about finding shapes of things that I think, “Oh, that’s interesting.” You can get carried away quite easily in 3D because you can just keep adding and adding and adding. And then all of a sudden, your thing doesn’t look good anymore. And then you’ve got to scale it back and it’s weird, like how wide do you go?

“It was kind of a case of trying to work out how those limitations would become positives rather than negatives.”

And that can sometimes be a battle. It’s a weird thing because I feel like a lot of the time, there’s probably only about an hour and a half’s worth of like if I was to remake, it would maybe only take me an hour. But sometimes it’s like four or five hours of just me looking at a thing. It started as a spaceship, then it became a building, and then it was a spaceship again. That process is a lot of fun. I use references and, obviously, I look at a lot of stuff on Pinterest and try and take as much. In the same way, we were talking about kitbashing and greebling. It’s the same thing. It’s like picking a little bit of that and a little bit of that and mashing them together and seeing what comes out.

How would you describe the relationship you have with your art?

That’s a good question. Would I describe it as an abusive relationship? Maybe I would.

I get super excited when I’m making something. And it’s got to a point where I’m happy with them, “Oh, there it is. Let’s go down this road.” And I’m super excited to put it out and the dopamine hit of people liking it and sharing it. I’m very, very lucky to have my work shared quite a lot. I think being starved of that for 10 years in the film industry, I need that feedback. So the last couple of years in the film industry was just being slower and slower as the budgets got bigger. And it was just was longer and longer period of time between projects. I think it’s become a joyous thing to just be able to make it and put it out and be excited about it. But I do look back at them after a couple of days and then don’t like looking at them anymore. So I have a fling with each of them.

How did Floaters come about?

It was a weird one. Although I’d been doing 3D for a little while, it was the first time I’d ever animated anything. So it was born out of restrictions really in that I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to animate people or do rigging or any of that stuff. So all we really had was the option to make things float and move up and down. So it was kind of a case of trying to work out how those limitations would become positives rather than negatives.

“You have to find the way that you want to do it.”

We stumbled upon this nice little idea where we just never see the inside of a spaceship and always just do everything from exteriors. That kind of became a selling point rather than a limitation. The design language is just a lot of fun. I think a lot of sci-fi can get quite serious, which I love, but it’s kind of nice to just undercut it with really dry British humor.

It turned out to be, I think by a country mile, the most popular thing either of us had ever done. And it was just sort of taking it not really seriously. I think it was an interesting exercise and just doing a thing that you feel like you could do well.

What would you say for people starting out their journey in art and 3D?

The hardest part of doing any of this stuff when you’re starting out is going back to it the next day. And you won’t go back the next day if you didn’t enjoy the day before. When you’re first starting to learn something, to get to a point where you enjoy it is really difficult, I had to start in a way that allowed me to sort of come back the next day. And I think that to do that, you have to find the way that you want to do it.

To begin with, you’re going to cut corners and you’re going to do it wrong. You are going to do it differently. I always say this about Blender and having a small sort of Patreon of people who have Blender questions and making tutorials. I think a lot of tutorials are designed for people or made by people who went to university and learned how to do 3D properly from the very basics. Whereas like my approach was I came in sideways and I was like, “Look, this thing works if you do this, I don’t necessarily know why. I don’t know what its purpose is, but it works.”

It might take you a little bit longer, but you’re never going to learn the proper way if you’re not doing it in a year’s time, two years’ time. And that’s the real shame is that people give up. If there’s a way you’re making something you’re happy with and you’re going back to it the next day, you’ll learn all of the other stuff. If you’re enjoying it, you’re going back to it.

After three years of production, Ian Hubert, king of the one-minute Blender tutorial, has uploaded the first episode of his sci-fi series, Dynamo Dream. And it’s been worth the wait. The series is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a salad merchant on a seemingly normal day through the dense streets of the Sunset District, a futuristic metropolis filled with fax machine drones, giant mutant crabs blocking traffic, and flying assassin bots.

The episode is visually stunning and seems to be endlessly filled with details. Every frame can be paused and observed, each containing hints to an expansive world that stretches beyond the camera’s frame. The world is convincing and surprisingly charming.

While bearing resemblance to other gritty dystopias, the folky music, calm atmosphere, and moments of pause let you know that humanity isn’t totally lost in the world of Dynamo Dream. There are still small joys to be found in the hustle and bustle. This continues into the protagonist, a merchant with a green thumb who sells salads in mugs. She’s a flower growing out of the cracks of the concrete, though things may not stay peaceful for long. Hopefully it won’t take another three years to find out.

Over the years, Hubert has shared behind-the-scenes looks at this project and has become a well-known figure in the 3D art community — namely, for making impressive work with ingenious animation methods spotlighted in his Lazy Tutorials series on his YouTube channel. His videos show you how to make a lot out of a little, often in under a minute’s time. Even more impressively, all 3D models used in this series were created using Blender, a free 3D package. Compositing was done using Adobe’s After Effects.

You can check out a few of those tutorials below and support Hubert through his Patreon, where he shares tutorials and 3D assets with his patrons.

As a visual artist who also makes beats in the anonymity of my bedroom, I’ve always wondered how Daft Punk managed to craft not only their music, but their visual presence. A masterpiece unto itself, the Daft Punk helmets transform two anonymous musicians into otherworldly beings. Arbiters of funk and electro. Ambassadors of sound. Gods of the synthesizer. You get it. The helmets allow the musicians to detach themselves from reality and bring the audience into their universe. It leaves the musician in mystery, and until today, the genesis of the helmets was a mystery to me too.

They also show the complex wiring that was required to power the matrix of LEDs, as well as behind-the-scenes images from Daft Punk’s very first photo shoot.

While The Verge is a place where stories are told, they wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if it weren’t for the artwork that accompanies them. Alex Castro is the illustrator for The Verge, and he is the best person to describe how his work complements our reporting.

What follows are Alex’s thoughts about the tools he prefers to use.

Illustration

I’ve heard illustrations described as “visual metaphors” that reflect the meaning of the words. I create artwork for Verge articles that communicates the sentiments of a story and catches the reader’s eye. Sometimes, it’s creating batches of simple graphics that could be used for a number of stories. Other times, it’s reading and rereading reports and features trying to dissect what the main takeaways of the stories are and creating visuals specifically for them. Often the hardest part of a project is the initial brainstorming when I’m extracting themes and attempting to translate them into visuals.

Alex Castro started out as a designer and creative director at a church in Florida, working on everything from video promotions to campus signage. He began at The Verge as an intern and joined the staff as a full-time illustrator shortly after.

What you need

An illustration setup can be as simple as a laptop or as elaborate as an independent art studio, filled with art supplies and tools. It really depends on the style of work. Many digital artists make use of drawing tablets and displays in order to draw directly into their computer software of choice. I do most of my work on the computer, so I tend to not have too much around me. I like to keep a sketchbook and pen handy in order to sketch ideas down quickly or take quick notes.

Computer, tablet, and sketchbook

When we were in the office, I worked on a 27-inch iMac and a 22-inch Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet. Since I’ve been working from home, I’ve switched to my Alienware Aurora R7 system and purchased a 19.5-inch Huion Kamvas Pro drawing tablet, which I don’t love as much as the Cintiq, but it’s a great budget option. I also have used a Wacom Intuos tablet, and sometimes I prefer its workflow over the display tablets since I don’t have to be hunched over the display to draw.

Regardless of what computer I’m using, I always have a pen and sketchbook handy. It’s much easier for me to brainstorm when I’m able to scribble all of my ideas freely.

Photoshop and added apps

Photoshop is my go-to for all of my artwork, as I’ve been using it since I was nine years old. It serves as the main hub for my work. Then I bring in assets from other software like Cinema 4D, where I create 3D objects, and Illustrator, where I can design high-res logos and icons. When animating or compositing video, I’ll jump into After Effects, which allows me to put together layers of video. I also use Photoshop plugins such as Topaz Studio and the Nik Collection to apply effects like AI-generated paint strokes, lens distortion, and double exposure. I usually paint these effects in using a layer mask in order to use them more as finishing touches rather than large overall effects.

When working on user interface designs, I usually use Figma, a web-based design software specifically made for interactive design. I really love its vector editing features, sometimes preferring it to Illustrator. For projects that could use some 3D work, I’ll occasionally use Blender instead of Cinema 4D. I personally prefer it to Cinema 4D, but since our team here doesn’t use it, I have to be proficient in both.

For beginners

If you’re just starting out, I think the cheaper Wacom tablets are a great start for any beginner digital artist. As far as software tools are concerned, I think Photoshop is a must-learn. GIMP or Krita are said to be great free alternatives, but I admit I’m not very familiar with them.

It’s been a rocky few years for multiplayer Star Wars games. In 2015, EA revived the Battlefront franchise only to deliver a beautiful but shallow arcade experience that didn’t require much skill. This was then followed up by an improved and expanded sequel, which only reached its full potential years after it was nearly immobilized by an industry-shaking microtransaction controversy.

Despite this, Battlefront II turned out to be one of my favorite Star Wars games. It received a batch of updates that I believe made up for its rocky start and kept me coming back. These updates were mainly focused on ground combat modes, leaving Starfighter Assault, its space battle mode, to go without an update since launch. While it was a fun mode, it largely relied on its spectacle and speed over engaging gameplay. It was fast, fun, and dumb.

Star Wars: Squadrons, EA’s new combat flight sim, slows down the pace and replaces the mindless one-button abilities with intricate systems that require moment-to-moment decisions and long-term planning. The ability to manipulate these systems, like power distribution and shield allocation, can separate the good pilots from the great.

Squadrons lowers the player count to 10, split between the New Republic and the Galactic Empire. Both sides allow players to select from four classes: the all-around fighter, the dedicated bomber, a speedy interceptor, or a team-focused support ship. Rebel ships come equipped with shields and generally have great visibility, which comes in handy in VR. Imperial ships, with the exception of the TIE Reaper, trade shields for the ability to immediately transfer power from one system to another, providing a complete laser recharge or full boost refill. They also have worse visibility, due to the classic TIE fighter cockpit design.

No two matches of ‘Squadrons’ are exactly the same

Within each faction, the classes all have a distinct feel. Some are more maneuverable, while others give and take more damage. Modifications to your ship’s components can bend one class to mimic the role of another. You could outfit your fighter to be more effective against capital ships, or you could tweak your bomber to be more effective against other starfighters.

These modifications always come with a trade-off, a theme that permeates throughout the rest of Squadrons. Every benefit has a drawback. In order to raise your top speed, you may need to sacrifice your overall health pool. This allows for a lot of personalization in your starfighters and really changes the way you play. Some loadouts may benefit from an aggressive mentality, requiring you to get in close and get out, while other kits allow you to move a bit slower and deal as much damage as you take. The variety of possibilities ensures that no two matches of Squadrons are exactly the same, and you have to be ready to adapt to any given situation. The starfighter with the steepest learning curve seems to be the support ships, which handle like big space boats and are a bit slower.

The two main multiplayer modes in Squadrons are dogfights, a short team deathmatch-type game mode, and fleet battles, a multistage objective-based mode focused on taking down the enemy’s flagship.

Fleet battles is the premier mode of Squadrons. Two teams go head to head with the ultimate goal of taking down the other’s capital ship. However, both teams must go through the other defensive line of fighters, corvettes, and frigates in order to make the final approach. Each side must work to boost their morale in order to push the frontline forward; each kill gives a morale boost, while each death takes some away.

There’s nothing like weaving through asteroids, dodging missiles, and laying mines for your pursuer to encounter

A fleet battle begins with an initial dogfight. This is where interceptors and fighters are handy. The winner gets a morale boost that propels them into the next phase, while the opposing team has to pull back and defend their frigates. These serve as defense structures and are extremely valuable. They keep the frontline away from your capital ship while also providing a resupply point during the attack phases. Losing one has real cost and can make attacking the enemy’s flagship much more challenging.

The constant push-and-pull nature of this mode makes it much more engaging than the linear hand-holding of Starfighter Assault in Battlefront II. I found myself clenching my controller as our Nebulon-Bs were on their last legs, swerving my bomber around, setting full power to my lasers to take down the incoming corvette. I feel like I have agency over a battle and can turn the tide of the battle based on how well I play my role.

Both modes are played on the same six maps, with size variations for the two modes. They offer great variety, and most of them provide excellent cover. In one round as a U-Wing, I led my team around an asteroid just above a Star Destroyer, using the squadron mask ability to hide our bombers from their scanners, setting us up for a perfect bombing run on their shield generators. In another round, I placed a turret mine around the corner of a debris field, just in front of our frigate, providing covering fire that would hit enemy bombers in their blind spot. There’s nothing quite like weaving through asteroids, dodging missiles, and laying mines around the bend for your pursuer to encounter.

‘Squadrons’ maintains the spectacle of the ‘Battlefront’ games while relinquishing control over the action to the player

That’s at the heart of what could make this an exciting esport: the potential for clever plays and team tactics. But whether this game has the steam to stick around is yet to be seen. After nearly 60 hours, I can feel the charm of the maps wearing off. With no upcoming content announced, I’m not sure moving up the competitive ranks would be worth grinding on the same maps over and over.

Ranking has also been a bit of a hassle at launch. For one, if any player drops out of a game, your whole game immediately becomes invalid for ranking. You could leave the unranked match without impacting your competitive rank, but it would count as a loss on your pilot record. So you’re forced to play a whole match down one or more players or sacrifice your ratio hoping the next round is better. At this point, my ranking is completely bugged. As soon as I finished my qualifying rounds, my rank reset to zero and my end-of-round rank screen glitched, with XP counting up to infinity. These are understandable issues to have at launch, but it’s been a bit discouraging as someone eager to climb the ranks.

Squadrons is the Star Wars game I’ve been waiting for. It challenges players and makes them sink deeper into its mechanics to improve. It maintains the spectacle of the Battlefront games while relinquishing control over the action to the player, raising the stakes for each strategy and decision. The big question is whether this game will have a prolonged life, especially in esports. EA continues to say that it has no plans for future content, so the future of Squadrons may be in the hands of the fans. Some are already forming their own tournaments, like the Calrissian Cup and Operation Ace. They may be Squadrons’ only hope.

Run The Jewels has teamed up with Sketchfab, an online platform to share and sell 3D artwork, for a remix challenge of the duo’s iconic pistol and fist logo. The logo has always inspired reinterpretation by fans — but now, the group is looking to reward those fans directly.

Fans can download the 3D model used in the production of their latest album cover, RTJ4, and put it into their own creations. To enter, artists have to upload their project to Sketchfab with the tag #RTJ4D. The prizes don’t look too bad either: XP-Pen tablets, a year subscription to Substance by Adobe, and, of course, RTJ 4 merch.

While this 3D model was used in the production of the Run The Jewels 4 album art, the final image on the cover was of a physical item based on those mock-ups. You can learn more about that process in my conversation with El-P and photographer Tim Saccenti about the visual storytelling of Run The Jewels.

Below are a few entries that I enjoy. And even though it’s a Sketchfab-only contest, I have to include this incredible Instagram post from the legendary Beeple.

Alongside the two antiheroes of Run The Jewels is a third, ever-present visual staple: the pistol and fist. This simple image has graced the cover of every Run The Jewels album, communicating very clearly what the duo are here to do. This image goes directly against more traditional hip-hop album artwork, which tends to feature a portrait of the artist in varying forms. By choosing a more symbolic art direction, the group sets the tone for their records to stretch beyond reality. This is supported by auxiliary imagery for packaging and album skits, which hint at the duo escaping hell.

The creation of the covers has been spearheaded by El-P, one-half of Run The Jewels, and recently, Tim Saccenti, a photographer and filmmaker who’s worked with El-P since his second album. However, both are quick to mention the contributions of numerous artists over the years, including illustrator Nick Gazin, who drew the first two covers and helped conceive the original logo, and, of course, Killer Mike, the other half of Run The Jewels. “I consider it to be sort of an art collective,” El-P says. “Different people have different moments in it that enhance it and turn it into what it is.”

I spoke separately with El-P and Saccenti about the history of Run The Jewels’ visuals and how they’ve been brought to life through sculpture and photography for their most recent albums. Here’s a combination of both interviews, which have been condensed and lightly edited for clarity.

El-P, you came up with the original logo design. How did that come about?

El-P: We knew we were going to release the record for free and that it was going to be self-titled. We really just wanted to strip all pretense out. And then I started to feel like, how can we get more primal? How can we say everything that we need to say without having to use words?

I grew up on things like Wu-Tang. You threw up the W, and you knew that there wasn’t that much more you could communicate. It was very simple. You could do it from a distance, you could do it as a greeting, you could do it as a sign of respect.

So I started playing around and sort of taking pictures of different things. I remember I took a picture of me holding up just some shitty chain that I had and doing the fist and pistol thing and sent it to Nick Gazin, an illustrator we met through Fool’s Gold. And I said, “This is it. This is the logo.” And that’s how it began.

“Whoever came up with the middle finger revolutionized language and communication for humans.”

What did you want the logo to convey?

El-P: The pistol and fist clutching the chain really meant, “Give me your fucking chain.” That was the first step in us sort of starting to define what this meant. Once we saw how powerful that was, we were like, “I’m not even putting our fucking name on this thing.”

It’s rare to stumble onto something that can use symbols for language that can be really easily understood. It’s not that easy to do. It was so powerful. It felt so real. It felt so obvious.

I was always aware of how powerful things were when they could be turned into a symbol. There’s nothing stronger on planet Earth in terms of communication than the middle finger. Whoever came up with the middle finger revolutionized language and communication for humans.

How did you decide to reinvent the logo for the second album?

El-P: On the second one, me and Mike knew that we were going to put a little bit more of our hearts into the record. We were going to take off a little bit of the superhero cape and show you a little bit more of who me and Mike really were. And so, there’s vulnerability that we really couldn’t show in the first half of it.

Ultimately — and I’m trying not to be long-winded, but I am stoned — there needed to be an evolution that just sort of represented us. There was some injury and pain involved in this project, and that’s where the bandages came in. Something was healing or something was injured.

I noticed that you guys reworked an image from the Run The Jewels 2 era for the latest album. Tell me more about it?

El-P: In the previous Run The Jewels albums, we always have like an action scene in the middle of the record. And it was always linked to the Grand National, Mike’s favorite car. So that became the Run The Jewels mobile ever since the second one, which I think is when [Gazin] drew that crazy action scene.

You have to honor the people involved. You have to honor Mike. I knew that Mike was super into doing Hot Wheels photography, and there’s this whole segment of photography that does miniature car photography. And one of the tricks that they use is that they use cotton for smoke. So what if we do one of these microphotographs, but did it macro? Has anyone ever attempted to create fake smoke with cotton, but with a real car?

So how’d you pull it off?

Tim: I started referencing [Federico] Fellini films and Terry Gilliam films, these films that are futuristic but also have this theater quality to them. My set designer had some very unusual cotton-type industrial material that he could shape into the form of the smoke. We had to be very technical with it. Mike was advising this event, saying like, “You can’t have that smoke there. This looks like my car just blew up.” I don’t know this. I’m from New York.

We took the illustration and perfectly aligned it over top of a real car using a Canon 5D and a 35 millimeter SLR system. Because the shot is so wide, we needed to use this particular body and wide lens. Then we built this whole world of smoke around the car matching the illustration, totally in camera. Luckily, we did all this before Run The Jewels got there. I think it took about 10 hours to set up.

EL-P: It was just fucking unbelievable to see it come to life.

I was surprised to hear the logo on LP3 is actually a sculpture.

Tim: The album sounded just like something you would hear blasting out of a car in New York in the ’80s. We wanted to level up the imagery from illustration and bring it into the real world, so we had the hands sculpted into gold.

Those were sculpted by hand by an amazing sculptor in Brooklyn and then plated with gold. They’re actually real, and they weigh like 10 pounds each.

The chain is missing in this one. Why is that?

EL-P: When you see people holding the logo up in a crowd, no one has a chain. So in our mind, it really started to become about people, and it really started to become about a declaration of self-worth and self-power and connection.

Now the goal was not to take something from anybody but to take your personal power to realize that the chain did not need to exist anymore. The gold chain was actually yourself. We made the hands gold because we wanted to reflect that sentiment.

Tim: We wanted to build this world out so I had the idea to make the hands gold. We’re bringing it into this very high-end reality and using the gold against the blue because the music felt kind of colder. Not as fiery but more widescreen. I shot them kind of like I was shooting a Porsche catalog, or something super rich-looking, and in hyper detail.

How’d you decide on this 3D, polygonal style for LP4?

EL-P: I had this interest in bringing the hands away totally from what they were known as. Turning it from a logo into something that harkens back to some of the most basic shapes. In other words, you don’t have to define fingers anymore. I wanted it to feel like something that you could dig up in a thousand years.

Back when I was a kid, the futuristic things you could imagine were sort of low polygon. Probably because of the fact that I grew up in the ’80s and saw movies like Tron and Dune. That kind of really broken-down, basic approach to putting shapes together simultaneously feels almost primal but also is rooted in the idea of our understanding of technology.

Tim: In my apartment, I have books on Jack Kirby, the illustrator, and Syd Mead. I looked at imagery from the 1984 Tron film, as well as some designs from the original Blade Runner. Syd Mead’s designs are very angular and brutal, and mixing that in with Killer Mike’s car — a muscle car from the ’70s or ’80s — it’s extraordinarily heavy. The lines are very brutal and harsh. It’s very boxy, and in a beautiful but terrifying way, almost like a hammerhead shark.

I sat down and did a bunch of test designs with the Rolfes brothers, longtime collaborators of mine. There were a lot of beautiful, amazing designs we had that just did not fit with the story or with the music. It felt like they would be amazing covers for an electronic act like Boards of Canada or designed for science fiction films. They were too glitchy or futuristic, and they weren’t emotional enough.

The hands on RTJ4 almost look rendered, like 3D models. They’re sculptures, too, right?

Tim: That was a creative challenge. People would see the cover and be like, “This is a cool 3D piece.” And we’d say “Okay, let’s shoot it again.” We wanted to make sure the texture was showing up. Some of the early photos didn’t have really enough texture to go with the album.

What’s it made out of?

Tim: We landed on a material that felt like a car. It was this super shiny black material meant to make it feel a little bit more like an artifact, like a Jack Kirby kind of thing, that had been left in space for millennia and then it just got discovered so was a bit scratched up.

We had it 3D printed. Then the models were taken to an auto body shop, painted with four or five coats of super black paint.

How did you get the texture to stand out in the photographs? The hands seem to be reflecting all different colors of light.

Tim: We shot the hands on various backgrounds in my studio, with whole different sets of colors and gels. We wanted hints of colors from the other albums — so there’s black from Run The Jewels 1, red from Run The Jewels 2, and there’s gold and little highlights in blue from Run The Jewels 3. This is supposed to be kind of the penultimate Run The Jewels artifact. It has a bit of the DNA of all the other ones.

We shot that with a Phase One medium format camera system and Capture One software. We used Schneider lenses, so these are super sharp lenses, and it’s a 150-megapixel camera because we were trying to shoot it almost like a museum piece, capturing every detail of the artifact. We want people to know that it’s real. The tricky part with this was that because it was so shiny and the lines were so brutal and basic, it looked like it was 3D.

How were you able to retain all that detail?

Tim: For jewelry or cars, or other reflective luxury items where you can’t necessarily get all the light perfect in one frame, you shoot multiple passes with a locked off camera. Those images can then be brought to retouchers who layer various parts of each shot. So we did different lighting passes on the hands — one pass for the red light, one pass for the gold light — and then combined those plates together in Photoshop.

How does it feel seeing people connect so strongly with the new album?

El-P: It’s pretty touching and pretty mind-blowing. This is not something that we could predict or control, and it’s a huge, huge compliment and honor.

Now, of course, do I wish that some of the darker moments on this record weren’t the things that connect with how people feel right now? Absolutely. I wish that Run The Jewels was the fucking paranoid ramblings of two out-of-touch men. When that day comes, I’ll happily start making dance records about silly little fucking stupid stories that mean nothing, and I’ll have a blast. It’ll just be fun.

We have fun with these records, don’t get me wrong. But it’s a double-edged sword. You realize, “Oh shit this is connecting with everyone right now on a really deep level.” And then you realize there’s no good goddamn reason referencing a man dying at the hands of a cop in 2014 should mean just as much in 2020. There’s no goddamn good reason.

If I had to sum up my condition over the last few weeks, it’d be exhaustion. I’m tired. I told a friend this week that my soul feels like it needs to hibernate. Not only in grieving for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade but also in viewing what feels like hundreds of accounts of hotheaded police officers violently attacking protesters who are demonstrating against police violence. Once again, I’m forced to confront the reality that I’m not as free as I’ve been led to believe. That our system is broken. That people want me dead, due to no fault of my own.

Before, during, and after times of hardship, many in the Black community create art to take in the pain and struggle and release a beauty that heals and teaches. Black creatives are always working, trying to find some understanding, envisioning a better world. Some of my most pleasant moments in the past few weeks were when a close friend and I just listened to music. We sat in its energy, each new song reflecting on our reality. We’d jump from Erykah Badu to 21 Savage to Rico Nasty to Buju Banton then back around again. From R&B classics to trap to gospel. Each twist in the playlist turns a new page in our own stories.

Here’s a selection of works that have been of service to me and some people to whom I think you should pay attention. Some of these I’ve loved for a while, other things I’ve only discovered recently. I hope you find something here that speaks to you or at least livens up your day.

This past year The Verge launched an ambitious sci-fi series, broke stories that started conversations and forced change in industries, made our first zine, created interactive timelines, guides and a couple of straight-up video games. And for each one, we made a piece of art to carry the story through. So as New Year’s Day approaches, we’ve compiled our favorite illustrations from 2019, made by our art team and incredible freelancers.
