Valve removed a user-created weapon from online battler Dota 2, an item directly copied to look like a mace from massively multiplayer online role-playing game Aion, the company announced today.

“A user submitted a mace for Dota 2, and based on strong community ratings, the mace was made available in the game as ‘Timebreaker’ in Sithil’s Summer Chest. 24,603 users spent money on keys to open the chest and ultimately receive the mace. Recently it came to our attention that this mace was in fact a copy of a mace from the game Aion,” Valve posted on the Steam Community website.

Players who bought the key were issued new weapons as replacements. The user who created the mace was banned and all proceeds from its sale were removed from the player’s account.

“As expected, the vast majority of contributions to the Workshop are incredibly creative and fundamentally original. Where that hasn’t been true, community reporting has led to the take-down of over 1,400 items from the Workshop to date,” wrote Valve.

The company reminded users that IP infringement is unacceptable in the Steam Workshop and encouraged the community to be vigilant in reporting future incidents.

At Nintendo’s E3 press conference this morning, the company confirmed New Super Mario Bros. U for the company’s upcoming Wii U console.

The game is similar to Super Mario Bros. Wii but features several additional mechanics. One player participates with the tablet controller while up to four other players use Wii motes. The player using the tablet can tap on the tablet’s screen to create platforms for the other players to jump on. Once a platformer has been jumped on it begins to shrink away. The game can also be transferred between the television to the tablet controller.

There is also a new flying-squirrel suit that allows players to glide. Players don the suit by collecting acorns.

Yoshi is also obtainable in New Super Mario Bros. U. If found as an item, shaking Yoshi will transform him into a giant balloon on which players can float. Yoshi can also shoot bubbles underwater.

At Sony’s E3 press conference this evening, Naughty Dog unveiled a new gameplay trailer for The Last of Us.

The trailer follows protagonists Joel and Ellie through an abandoned hotel buried in overgrown weeds and a flooded first floor. Joel leads the way with Ellie on his heels, chattering idly to fill the silence. As they climb to the next floor and round a corner, Joel spies someone rifling through the doors of battered dresser. Within seconds Joel has choked the stranger and pockets the goods for himself.

Gunfire heralds the presence of other people, and as Joel returns their fire and advances through the hotel, Ellie creeps along behind him. Joel and Ellie duck into a room to hide, and as Joel hides half-in a closet his shoulders brush the hangers, stirring them. After a frantic, heart-pounding game of cat and mouse with several angry attacks, Joel grabs an assailant’s <strike>rifle</strike> shotgun, wrestles the next guy to the ground, and blows his head off.
