Snap, Inc. is building a presence in China despite the fact that its Snapchat app is banned in the country, according to a report from CNN. Snap’s Chinese operation will reportedly focus on Spectacles. The company already assembles the video-recording sunglasses in China, but the new recruits will focus on research and development. Job applications were spotted on WeChat by the Chinese tech news website NetEase. The job description requires potential hires to have at least three years of experience, and Snap is particularly interested in engineers who’ve worked at well-known Chinese tech companies such as Tencent, Baidu, or Alibaba.

Snap is seeking applicants with three years of work experience, preferably in large technology companies

China represents a lucrative market for many technology companies, given that it boasts the world’s biggest population and highest number of internet users. However, heavy censorship rules have made it extremely difficult for some US tech companies to establish a strong presence in China. Apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter are all blocked and access is only possible through roundabout solutions like VPNs.

Snap is offering its China hires a possible transfer to its US headquarters as well as stock options. Despite Snapchat’s ban in China, the company has drawn interest from local technology companies. Alibaba was reported to have invested $200 million in 2015, and Tencent was believed to have been part of its $60 million fundraising round in 2013.

It’s been a big year for Snap. The company released its first hardware product with Spectacles and followed that up by filing for its initial public offering, reportedly aiming to raise up to $4 billion with the IPO expected to come as early as March.

Amazon is kicking off the holiday season by giving its customers the entire catalog of country music star Garth Brooks, the best-selling solo artist in US history. Brooks’ 16-album collection will be available exclusively on Amazon Music, starting on December 24th at the stroke of midnight Eastern Standard time. Fans who are Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can stream the entire compilation, and Brooks’ albums will also be made available for purchase and digital downloads.

The online retail giant announced the launch of Amazon Music, its long-rumored on-demand music service, in October this year. The launch was not accompanied by album or artist exclusives, which has become somewhat commonplace in the age of streaming services. The major exception to that trend is Spotify, who reportedly told Billboard that exclusives are bad for the music industry.

Drake’s most recent album, Views, was an Apple Music and iTunes exclusive the week it was released. Grammy winner Frank Ocean released his digital album Blonde exclusively on Apple Music, which led his former label, Universal Music Group (UMG), to ban exclusives for its artists (Ocean released Blonde after fulfilling his contract with UMG.)

Album and artist exclusives are becoming commonplace in the age of streaming

Amazon Music has sought to differentiate itself from its competitors by providing lower prices, and promoting its user-friendliness and technology — particularly its voice integration with Echo and Alexa. Plans range from $3.99 a month, $7.99 a month, $9.99 a month, and $14.99 a month. Yearly plans are also available for $79 and $149.

However, shortly after its release, Amazon Music announced its exclusive partnership with Garth Brooks. Earlier that month, Amazon Music vice president Steve Boom reportedly said that Amazon doesn’t have a “firm-stance on full on exclusives” and was evaluating on whether to include exclusives in their strategy.

What makes the Amazon Music / Garth Brooks partnership different from other exclusives is that he is an artist whose popularity peaked over a decade ago. But it appears that Brooks continues to have a solid fan base. In a statement, Boom said that two months after his exclusive debut on Amazon Music, Brooks “has become one of the top streamed artists” on the service.

Brooks has become one of the top-streamed artist on Amazon Music since his exclusive debut

Brooks has sold a total of 138 million albums during the course of his career, ahead of Elvis Presley at 136 million but behind The Beatles at 178 million, as reported by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). He is the first artist with seven diamond albums, a label given by the RIAA for albums that sells for 10 million copies or more.

As Airbnb looks to expand its business model to include travel consultation and flight booking, the home-sharing platform continues to tussle with regulators over its primary business: short-term rentals. Dozens of hosts gathered in New York City today to voice their concerns at a hearing conducted by the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement. The hearing was held to allow public comments on the proposed enforcement of a new state law which prohibits the listing of unoccupied apartments for less than 30 days. It has always been illegal to rent like this, but now it is illegal to advertise, in other words, to list on services like Airbnb.

Most of the Airbnb hosts who spoke at the hearing urged the Mayor’s Office to exempt individual hosts from being subject to this law. Joy Williams, a host from Harlem who listed her property on Airbnb after her tenants broke their lease, said that “the law should target illegal commercial hotel operators and not the thousands of hosts who rely on Airbnb as an economic lifeline.”

Linda Rosenthal, New York Assembly member and main sponsor of the law, briefly attended the hearing to express her support of the new rule. She re-iterated her discontent with Airbnb’s practices, saying that “illegal hotels represent a pernicious threat” to New York residents and contribute to rising rents and gentrification of neighborhoods.

Hosts are worried that the new law doesn’t distinguish between individuals and illegal commercial operators

The proposed rule gave no indication whether New York City will distinguish individual hosts from commercial operators who are effectively running hotels — illegally — through the Airbnb platform. Helen Rosenthal, New York Council Member, said in her testimony that the focus of the law should be on “the commercial illegal hotel operators. Those who either are building owners who warehouse empty apartments; or individuals who lease multiple apartments in many buildings, to rent them out on Airbnb.”

She acknowledged the complications of enforcing the law on individual tenants, but did not say that they should be exempt. Rather, she encouraged a “proactive and robust educational campaign” to ensure that individual tenants “do not unknowingly engage in illegal acts.”

The proposed rule spelled out the penalties that infringers would be slapped with. Those who violate the law for the first time will be fined $1,000, $5,000 for the second time, and $7,500 for the third and subsequent violations.

The fines escalate for repeat offenders

Airbnb has begun to soften up its stance after a series of aggressive public feuds with regulators. The company recently settled a lawsuit that it brought against New York City over the new law.

Josh Meltzer, head of New York Public Policy at Airbnb, said in a statement that the company hopes that today’s hearing allows officials to “hear the collective voice of hundreds of hosts, businesses, and organizations who are urging the City to keep their promise to target illegal hotel operators, not middle class families who are struggling to pay the bills.”

“We look forward to working with the City to accomplish that goal,” said Meltzer. “The vast majority of New York hosts share only their own home, and do not deserve to be slapped with fines that are worse than those given to slumlords who harass their tenants.”

UPDATE 2:31 PM ET 12/20: Clarified that it has always been illegal in New York to advertise unoccupied apartments for less than 30 days. The new law prohibits advertising those properties or listing them on services like Airbnb.

Amino wants to be the go-to place for your interest — whether that’s paranormal activities, motorcycles, or Harry Potter. The startup’s broad goal — create communities around topics — is very similar to Reddit, but its execution is aimed at mobile natives. Reddit was built in the desktop era and only recently launched a fairly bare-bones mobile app. Amino believes it can capture a younger generation.

The startup announced today that it has raised $19.2 million in Series B funding. It’s planning to use that cash for international expansion, adding new languages, hiring regional staffers, and curating communities tailored to specific countries. It also has its eye on ways it might monetize, and new features optimized for mobile-native demographics who don’t like to use Facebook or desktop computers.

Amino went from 90 communities in July 2016 to over 250,000 communities

Until the summer of 2016, Amino used to be a network of standalone apps, totaling about 4 million users and about 90 communities. But they soon realized that it wasn’t the fastest way to grow. “We realized pretty quickly that we had become the bottleneck,” remarks Ben Anderson, Amino’s CEO and co-founder. “Managing 90 communities is really challenging because you have to have a lot of domain knowledge and understanding of the topic in order to be a good manager in that community.”

So Anderson and his team opted to create one master app, Amino and handed the community creation responsibility to its users. The Amino creator and manager lets the users build a group, appoint leaders, and manage members. They can then apply to be a “listed” community, which essentially means Amino’s stamp of approval. The Amino team then rejects or approves their request based on criteria like membership numbers and volume of content.

Since the launch, the number of communities has increased from 90 to more than 250,000, with versions now available in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Russian. Niche fandom groups like K-pop, Anime, Pokémon Go, and Minecraft make up a large chunk of the communities in the app, but you will also find groups titled “science and technology,” where scientists have debates about the constellations, or “school life can be tough,” where students console each other about receiving a bad grade and send supportive messages about studying for finals.

The app is now available in English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Portuguese

The vibe in the app is like an old-school chatroom meets Reddit with some Tumblr posts thrown in — but specifically for mobile. “I’m a firm believer in things that are built from the ground up to be mobile,” says M.G. Siegler, a partner at GV who invested in Amino during its seed round and also led the Series B round. “There’s a lot of talks of mobile slowing down in terms of sales, but the reality is, it’s still growing.”

Siegler expects that with Amino’s growing popularity, more and more newcomers will try to enter the market. But he isn’t worried about how Amino will fare. “I think that’s a healthy thing. If you look back at all the successful product that we see, they basically have all have some level of competition that pushes them.” A potential competitor might be Korean-based BAND, though judging by their marketing materials, their targeted demographic seems to skew a little older than Amino’s.

Having competition is “a healthy thing”

Anderson does want to broaden his reach beyond mobile-obsessed teenagers though, saying that his ultimate goal is for people to turn to Amino for “anything you can possibly do that’s related to your interest.” The company is still in the pre-revenue stage, but Anderson expects that the app will make money in the future through a combination of selling digital goods, advertisement, and having an e-commerce store.

Anderson is also adamant that Amino will not suffer the same fate as the Yik Yaks and Yos of the app world, saying that people’s interests and passions will never go away. “So as long as we can keep up with the technology and be on the platforms that people want to be on, and have the best experience for your interests and passion, I think that this is a very long-term plan.”

Rollouts will start in Dudley Square Innovation District and expansion will continue street-by-street in Roxbury, Dorchester, Roslindale, and West Roxbury.

Verizon put on an optimistic front, calling residents “the winners” of its FiOS launch and its partnership with the City of Boston. Based on Verizon’s past FiOS launch, however, there are good grounds to be skeptical of the actual benefits Boston residents will reap. In 2008, Verizon partnered with New York City’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DOITT), promising all New York City residents access to fiber by the summer of 2014. What eventuated was a disagreement between DOITT and Verizon over the terms of Verizon’s obligations, when an audit conducted by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration and DOITT revealed that there were over 40,000 unfulfilled FiOS requests.

In October 2015, 13 Northeastern mayors (including New York) wrote a letter to Verizon’s CEO, Lowell McAdam, criticizing Verizon’s slow FiOS build out, and its “failure to meet contractual or legislative deadlines to make fiber optic cable service available.” The company responded by saying, “In all areas where Verizon has franchises and agreed to deploy FiOS, we have met or surpassed our deployment obligations.”

According to the Boston Herald, the City of Boston has approved Verizon’s application for a cable license, which allows Verizon to sell and market FiOS.

Update 3:56PM ET 12/7: Clarified that Verizon was awarded its cable license by the City of Boston.

Spotify has just released its annual list of the most popular artists, albums, and tracks for 2016, and Drake is the clear winner. Just like last year, the Canadian rapper and unofficial meme king took home the title of Spotify’s most-streamed artist with a whopping 4.7 billion streams.

Drake was streamed 4.7 billion times on Spotify

Music-wise, 2016 has been a pretty good year for the singer / songwriter / record producer / actor, whose streaming domination extends beyond Spotify. His most recent album, Views, hit 1 billion streams on Apple Music, which earned him a Tim Cook-signed celebratory plaque. He was also the most listened to artist on Pandora in most US states. Drake is currently working on a collaboration with Kanye West, so keep an eye out for their version of Watch the Throne.

Drake also topped Spotify’s most-streamed album of the year with Views, and the most-streamed track with “One Dance (feat. WizKid and Kyla)” — strangely also the most popular breakup song of 2016. For the second year in a row, Rihanna dominated the most-streamed female artist category, ahead of Ariana Grande, Sia, Adele, and Fifth Harmony. Former One Directioner Zayn Malik, referred to by his stage name Zayn, was named Spotify’s breakout artist for 2016.

President Obama awarded his last Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest US honor given to a civilian — in a packed ceremony on Tuesday, according to The New York Times. Margaret Hamilton, the woman behind the onboard flight software for NASA Apollo lunar modules and command modules, was among the 21 recipients.

Hamilton is the brains behind Apollo’s onboard software

Hamilton, who invented the term “software engineer,” began her career as a computer programmer at MIT in the 1960s. In August 1961, NASA issued a contract to MIT to design the spacecraft’s guidance and navigational system. Hamilton presided over the in-flight software group, which included overseeing the alarm system that would give a warning when the computer was overloaded, but at the same time allowed it to switch its focus to critical tasks and stop doing non-critical tasks.

This alarm system proved to be crucial in the moments leading up to Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong’s Moon landing when it rang due to a faulty radar. But it allowed Aldrin and Armstrong to continue with the landing as the computer informed the crew that it was shedding its less-important functions to focus on steering the engine during the spacecraft’s descent.

During the award ceremony, Obama said Hamilton represents “that generation of unsung women who helped send humankind into space.” Her prominence as a woman in technology came into focus at the end of 2015, when an image of her was tweeted in reference to IBM’s awkward and much criticized #HackAHairDryer campaign.

View Link

Hamilton was honored by NASA in 2003 for her work and innovation in Apollo software development. She is known for having a rigorous testing approach to her work. According to Wired, Hamilton remembered leaving a party late a night to fix code she realized was flawed. She told the magazine, “I was always imagining headlines in the newspapers, and they would point back to how it happened, and it would point back to me.”

Other recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom include pioneering programming Grace Hopper, who received a posthumous award, and celebrities and athletes like Ellen DeGeneres, and Michael Jordan — who both teared up during the ceremony. A number of other entertainers, such as Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, and Robert DeNiro, were also awarded, as well as philanthropic couple Bill and Melinda Gates.

Telegram now has a blogging platform to go along with its popular messaging app. It’s called Telegraph and, according to VentureBeat, offers fast publishing and anonymous posting — without requiring you to register an account or sign in through social media.

Telegraph is fast and anonymous

The app’s user interface looks very similar to Medium and allows for easy embeds. You can also embed images from your computer by clicking on the camera button. In comparison to Medium, the loading time for embeds is relatively fast. Publication is instantaneous upon hitting “publish.” Posts are shareable on social media platforms but are designed to work best on Telegram’s new Instant View layout, which works similarly to Facebook’s Instant Articles feature.

The simplicity and speed of Telegraph are not without its downsides. As TechCrunch points out, the lack of user history means that if you accidentally delete the link to your published post, it would be very difficult to track down unless you have cookies enabled on your browser. The anonymous nature also opens up opportunities for abuse, potentially paving the way for internet trolls and spreaders of fake news — a problem that has put tech giants like Facebook and Google under scrutiny.

Telegram’s user base has grown significantly since its inception, though it continues to lag behind WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. In February this year, founder Pavel Durov announced that the company hit 100 million active users.

The introduction of Telegraph continues Telegram’s expansion beyond just messaging. The company recently added games, and in a blog post, it teased “Something big is brewing in our secret dungeons. Stay tuned.”

Fitbit is trying to drum up its appeal to video gamers by adding in-game rewards for those who use its wearable. The fitness tracking company has announced an integration with the game NBA 2K17, which enables gamers to receive a small in-game boost to their MyPlayer — a custom character — if they meet Fitbit’s 10,000 steps goal for the day.

It’s the first wearable tracker / video game console integration

Dallas Maverick and Fitbit ambassador Harrison Barnes said that the integration gives him an “extra incentive” to meet his target steps due to the additional gaming edge he gets as a result. It’s worth noting, however, that Barnes belongs to the camp of individuals who will probably meet their target with or without game integration. Although the announcement sets an interesting precedent to gamify exercise and merge physical activities with the gaming world, the NBA 2K17 / Fitbit partnership may not provide enough rewards for devoted NBA 2K17 players to start tracking their steps, unless it’s something they are already doing.

The partnership is the first integration between a wearable tracker and a console video game, though it builds on an existing trend of fitness device makers partnering with other companies in a bid to attract more users.
The integration will be enabled for users on November 25th, just in time for the holiday season.

BMW’s car-sharing service ReachNow is expanding beyond the West Coast. After launching in Seattle in April this year, the service broadened its presence to Portland in August, and today announced the addition of an initial 250-car fleet in Brooklyn, New York. Among the fleet will be BMW 3 Series and the Mini Clubman.

ReachNow’s announcement means more competition to Daimler’s Car2Go and Avis’ Zipcar, both of which have an established presence in New York. The three services are similar in operation. Potential users register as “members,” which enables them to find and book cars through an app that indicates available cars within a certain vicinity. Upon return, users can park the car at any legal parking spaces.

An initial fleet of 250 vehicles will be available in Brooklyn

BMW says ReachNow cars can be parked at “metered spaces within a city’s designated Home Area.” In Brooklyn, that area spans north to Greenpoint and Williamsburg, south to Sunset Park, and east to include portions of Borough Park, Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Bushwick.

To become a member, users are required to pay a $39 one-off registration fee. ReachNow users are typically charged a rate of 49 cents per minute when driving, and 30 cents per minute when parking.

The launch and expansion of ReachNow capitalizes on the declining trend of private car ownership, and a rising demand for versatile and convenient experiences. Other notable car-sharing platforms that have launched this year include GM’s Maven and Ford’s GoDrive. Tesla also has ambitions for its own car-sharing service and Toyota has shown signs of entering the crowded market by recently launching its Smart Key Box device, which allows users to unlock a car and start the engine with a code sent to their smartphone.

When ReachNow launched in Seattle, Daimler issued a statement that echoes the competitive sentiment of the car-sharing market. “One-way carsharing is a complex business to operate, and any new competitor will have a significant learning curve to contend with,” a spokesperson for Daimler said. However, the company also went on to say that “the more mass transit, carsharing and ridesharing options people have to get around,” the better people’s quality of life will be because there will be less traffic and congestion.

In addition to ReachNow’s presence in Brooklyn, the company also announced a series of pilot programs that will take place in the next month or so.
