What would your toys do if they came to life? Many of us have imagined this very idea at some point during our childhoods. But Canadian photographer Daniel Picard has taken it a step further than most, putting action figures in front of realistic backgrounds and photographing them to make them appear life-sized. Picard’s ongoing photo series, “Figure Fantasy,” shows the more mundane side of some of the most popular heroes and villains in pop-culture: Batman is seen engaging in some very uncharacteristic petty crime, Cobra Commander has dog problems, while Darth Vader takes a trip to the bathroom — complete with his personal Stormtrooper guard duty in tow. Picard uses some digital post-processing effects on his photos to add motion and flares, but the real magic comes in his reliance on forced perspective, making his small subjects appear much larger than their 1:6-scale. See a sample of some of his work below and the full series on his website.

Your next sexy dance party may not be complete without a box of Honey Nut Cheerios from Walmart. Why? Because they’re sweet and crunchy and you need to eat them so your heart will be healthy enough for you to dance…or something. And because Honey Nut Cheerios are for now the only way for you to legally get access to Usher’s newest single, “Clueless.” As Billboard reported, Walmart today began selling specially marked boxes of the cereal that contain a download code for the latest song from the man who brought us “Yeah” and “Confessions, Part II” among other smash R&B hits.

It’s hardly the first time Usher Raymond has done unusual product placement for his new music: anyone remember Dance Central 3? But he’s taking this one really far, even appearing in a TV commercial dance-off with the Honey Nut Cheerios mascot, Buzz the Bee, earlier this year (above). “Usher loves Honey Nut Cheerios and was excited about spreading the word about heart health, so it was just meant to be,” said one the General Mills marketing executives who cooked up the plan, presumably while fanning herself with an empty box of Cheerios®.

Usher had this to say for himself on Twitter.

Battlin’ @buzzthebee #Cheerios #HealthRevolution pic.twitter.com/muoUp1usd5
— Usher Raymond IV (@Usher) August 28, 2014

Hey, if this is what some musicians have to do eat these days*, more power to him.

*Anecdotal evidence says it’s not.

Correction: The article originally stated that “Clueless” is a single off of Usher’s upcoming album UR, but it is not.

America’s annual holiday shopping frenzy Black Friday is still more than two weeks away, but big retailers are already trotting out their lists of discounts and deals. Target, for one, claims that this year’s Black Friday will be its “biggest” and “most digital” ever (perhaps trying to make up for its earlier massive credit card hack). It’s certainly starting early and will have lots of gift card rebates, according to its Black Friday preview ad. Target will offer some pre-sale Black Friday discounts in stores and online starting Wednesday, November 26th, but you need to check Target’s weekly ad here on Sunday, November 23rd to find out what specific details will be offered at your local store. Target stores will open on at 6 PM local time on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27th, in most places except Massachusetts. For last-minute shoppers, Target will be open from 7 AM to 9 or 10 PM local time on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24th.

From Sunday, November 23rd, through Saturday, November 29th, Target will offer exclusive discounts through its free shopping app Cartwheel (Android and iOS). Those deals include 50 percent off a different toy every day, 60 percent off select movie titles, and discounts on bakeware and board games.

Those pesky deadites won’t stay dead! The Evil Dead, the influential 1980s horror/comedy trilogy from director Sam Raimi, is being resurrected as an original TV series on Starz in 2015, the company announced today. That follows Raimi’s confirmation last summer that he and his brother Ivan were writing the series. And not only is Raimi back onboard to direct the pilot, but Bruce Campbell will return in his iconic starring role as Ash Williams, the tenacious and wisecracking warrior/stock boy. The 10 half-hour-long episode series, titled Ash vs. The Evil Dead, which takes place about 30 years after the events depicted at the end of Army of Darkness, will air on Starz sometime in 2015. Here’s the official synopsis from the network:

The STARZ Original series officially titled “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip…

If that doesn’t get you excited, this quote from Campbell should:

“I’m really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide – it’s going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor,” said Bruce Campbell.

The original Evil Dead trilogy, with its charmingly low-budget (but effective) gore effects and schlocky dialogue, is responsible for spawning an entire generation of “cabin in the woods” horror imitations. It later became the subject of a musical, several comics and video games, and the original film was remade last year in a far more serious fashion. The fact that Starz would seek to breathe new life into it isn’t surprising in the least, especially given the network’s aspirations to reinvent itself as a destination for more celebrated original programming in the mold of its sibling HBO (see The Knick, which premiered earlier this year). Now it just remains to be seen how many boomsticks will be in store for viewers come next year.

Pink Floyd fans freaked out when they found out the legendary psychedelic rock band would be putting out a whole new album of previously unreleased music titled The Endless River. The first single landed last week and only further stoked interest in the band’s turn toward mostly instrumental songs (many of them originally recorded in 1993). Last night, it became the most-preordered album in history on Amazon UK. Now the full album The Endless River is out on iTunes and Amazon and available for streaming on Spotify and Rdio. Take that, Taylor Swift!

On top of that, the band has released a new teaser music video today for “Louder Than Words,” the only lyrical song on the album. The video is fittingly surreal for the same band responsible for the classic 1982 film The Wall, with haunting scenes of the environmentally devastated Aral Sea captured on location in a remote area on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, as Rolling Stone reports.

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason discuss the album in another video released last week:

All of which means if you can’t get in touch with your resident prog rock fan today, you’ll know why.

Warning: spoilers for Interstellar lie ahead

Neil deGrasse Tyson sparked a fierce debate with his Twitter review of the movie Gravity last year and now he’s returned to share his thoughts on this fall’s ambitious new sci-fi spectacle Interstellar. In a series of tweets deGrasse Tyson posted last night, the famed astrophysicist and host of the revived TV show Cosmos shared his informed take on the science of the film, finding much to love — and some to nitpick, especially with the plot. He qualified it all afterward with a tweet reminding his followers he’s not a professional movie critic: “Never look to me for opinions on new films. All I do is highlight the science one might or might not find in them.” That said, deGrasse Tyson’s analysis provides some added context for those who want to understand more about the theoretical physics that informed the film. If you’ve already seen the movie or don’t care to have it spoiled, read on for some of his most illuminating takes. And be sure to check out The Verge‘s own discussion on the issues in Interstellar.

In #Interstellar, if you didn’t understand the physics, try Kip Thorne’s highly readable Bbook “The Science of Interstellar”
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

It’s already been well publicized that Interstellar director Christopher Nolan and his fellow screenwriter (and brother) Jonathan Nolan leaned heavily on the theories of American astrophysicist Kip Thorne to craft the film’s story. Thorne met with the director constantly over a five month period to discuss how to craft realistic special effects for the space travel scenes, according to The New York Times Magazine. In fact, not only is Thorne credited as an executive producer on the film, but a key character is also named after Thorne, as deGrasse Tyson points out.

In #Interstellar: There’s a robot named KIPP. One of the Executive Producers, a physicist, is named Kip. I’m just saying.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

As such, Thorne’s contribution to the movie seems to have paid off, at least when it comes to scientific viability. As deGrasse Tyson points out:

In #Interstellar: You enter a 3-Dimensional portal in space. Yes, you can fall in from any direction. Yes, it’s a Worm Hole.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

Thorne isn’t the only physicist whose theories make Interstellar so scientifically sound. Pointing out a key plot point that revolves around the Twin Paradox, deGrasse Tyson writes:

In #Interstellar: Experience Einstein’s Relativity of Time as no other feature film has shown.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

In #Interstellar: And in the real universe, strong gravitational fields measurably slow passage of time relative to others.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

In #Interstellar: Experience Einstein’s Curvature of Space as no other feature film has shown.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

He further praises Interstellar‘s depiction of a black hole and its effects on nearby planetary bodies:

In #Interstellar: You observe great Tidal Waves from great Tidal Forces, of magnitude that orbiting a Black Hole might create
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

Of course, that doesn’t mean he wants to visit one anytime soon:

In #Interstellar: They explore a planet near a Black Hole. Personally, I’d stay as far the hell away from BlackHoles as I can
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

He points out some geek trivia for fans of another sci-fi epic:

In #Interstellar: They reprise the matched-rotation docking maneuver from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but they spin 100x faster.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

A persistent advocate of diversity in STEM fields (science, tech, engineering, math), deGrasse Tyson found a lot to like about the film’s casting as well:

In #Interstellar: All leading characters, including McConaughey, Hathaway, Chastain, & Caine play a scientist or engineer.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

In #Interstellar: Of the leading characters (all of whom are scientists or engineers) half are women.
He did seem to take issue with a few aspects of the movie, however.

In #Interstellar: On another planet, around another star, in another part of the galaxy, two guys get into a fist fight.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

In #Interstellar, if you didn’t understand the plot, there is no published book to help you.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) November 10, 2014

Read More: the problems with 'Interstellar'

Tinder is no longer just a way to quickly swipe through a bunch of photos of prospective mates: it’s now also a place for opponents of sex work to promote their cause, at least in Ireland. Irish advertising agency EightyTwenty just launched a controversial new campaign on Tinder that uses several fake profiles of actresses portraying women supposedly forced into sex work in the country.

The first few photos on these profiles are nothing out of the ordinary, but interested parties who swipe right to see more photos soon come across images of the women showing startlingly realistic simulated injuries and other signs of abuse. The final two images on each fake profile include a message decrying sex trafficking and a link to another organization, Turn Off The Red Light, which seeks a full ban on all forms of sex work throughout all of Ireland. Up until recently, sex work was technically legal under Irish law, although public solicitation was not. Yet politicians in Northern Ireland recently passed a bill that makes any exchange of money for sexual services illegal, even when the exchange is consensual.

There are several big issues with this campaign: the first and most obvious being that creating fake profiles would seem to go against Tinder’s own user guidelines. It’s also an odd tactic to take to rally support for any cause: tricking people into believing what they’re seeing are actual potential dating matches, only to find out they’ve been duped by a political campaign.

But most problematic is the conflation of human trafficking with consensual sex work. The group linked to in each of these fake Tinder profiles, Turn Off The Red Light, claims that “very few women choose to willingly engage in prostitution. Most who are involved have had very few real choices.” Sex trafficking is a very real and pervasive problem, but it is not the same as consensual sex work, as the Human Trafficking Center notes. And the fact is that the overwhelming majority of sex workers in Ireland are opposed to the ban on their services, and say that criminalizing their business — driving it out of the public regulatory framework — will only make it more unsafe. (The use of the term “prostitution” is also considered derogatory by many sex workers, so it’s probably not the best choice for a group that claims to support women.) I’ve reached out to Tinder for a response to these actions and will update when I hear back.

Selfie. It’s a popular word these days for describing a self-portrait, usually taken on a mobile phone, in many cases posted to a social media website with a faux-vintage colored filter. It was also, briefly, the name of a comedy TV series on ABC starring Karen Gillan (formerly of Doctor Who) and John Cho (Harold in the Harold and Kumar series). Although seemingly doomed from the start by its irritating, forced topical name and threadbare premise (an obnoxiously narcissistic woman learns important life lessons from her nebbish male colleague), it actually won praise from some viewers who found it a surprisingly effective critique of the emotional vacuousness of modernity. Or something. In any case, it’s gone now: ABC won’t be ordering a second season of the series, according to TV Line. With the speed with which the show arrived and disappeared, perhaps it would have better been named Snapchat.

Poor Microsoft. The company just can’t catch a break when it comes to its live-on-air, TV promotional campaigns for the Surface. First there was the widely-mocked giant Surfaces that showed up in a redesigned Fox News newsroom. Then we all had to hear NFL sportscasters describing the Surfaces being used on the field in cringeworthy fashion as “iPad-like tools.” But perhaps the worst slight came last night when CNN commentators discussing the 2014 US mid-term elections were caught using their Surfaces as stands for completely different tablets (probably iPads). After all these marketing mishaps, maybe Microsoft should consider bringing back its Surface break dancers.
