MTV’s annual Movie & TV Awards will air in June, and the network just released its final list of nominees in categories like Best Hero, Best Villain, Most Frightened Performance, and Best On-Screen Team.

Black Panther racked up the most nominations, with seven total in categories like Best Movie and Best Hero. Netflix’s Stranger Things earned six nominations, including Best Show, Best Performance in a Show (Millie Bobby Brown) and Best Kiss (Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard). 2017’s It has a total of four nominations, while Black Mirror has just one: for Most Frightened Performance in “USS Callister.” The awards are also so up-to-the-moment that Avengers: Infinity War, which just opened, is represented in several categories, including Best Movie.

Tiffany Haddish is hosting the show, and recent promos featuring the actress do their best to poke fun at more straitlaced industry awards shows. ”You don’t want another generic dude in a tux hosting a boring-ass award show,” Haddish says. “You want the boss who paved her own way.” Haddish, who’s wearing work boots rather than the usual controversial awards-show stiletto heels, then rolls out the red carpet herself. (Incidentally, she’s also nominated this year, in the Scene Stealer category for her role as Dina in 2017’s Girls Trip.)

This year, MTV is attempting to attract viewers by pointing out the ways in which the ceremony is not like other awards shows. While storied awards shows like the Oscars struggle with issues of diversity, MTV continues to emphasize its gender-neutral acting awards, which were first implemented last year.

After doing away with its unlimited model just two weeks ago in favor of a limited four-movie-per-month plan for new users, MoviePass has flip-flopped back to its old one-movie-per-day plan. And CEO Mitch Lowe now says the subscription service is “absolutely committed” to keeping it that way, Wired reports.

Just a few days ago, Lowe’s commitment to the unlimited plan didn’t seem so solid, when he said he wasn’t sure if the plan would ever return. At the time, MoviePass was offering a plan in which the $9.95 / month fee, billed quarterly, allowed users to see just four movies per month, along with a seemingly random three month trial of iHeartRadio’s All Access Subscription.

Since steeply dropping its subscription fees last summer, MoviePass has implemented a virtually nonstop parade of experiments and changes. Last fall it launched an annual subscription plan for $89.95 upfront, which worked out to a lower monthly fee, but didn’t allow users to ask for refunds. It pulled support from some popular AMC theaters, after AMC said it was devaluing the cost of movie tickets. It vigorously promoted some movies while banning other competing movies in some markets. Recently, it modified its Terms of Service so that subscribers can’t see the same movie more than once. Throughout all this, the company has been hemorrhaging money, and has yet to prove that its business model is sustainable.

Lowe told Wired that the company is still “fine-tuning this model,” but said MoviePass has fixed its relationship with AMC theaters. “I can assure you that we are not contemplating or even thinking about removing any AMC theaters,” he says.

The $9.95 / month unlimited plan and the iHeartRadio promotion are both currently available to sign up for at MoviePass’ website.

Hulu just released a new teaser for its upcoming drama Castle Rock that hints at how the mysterious Maine town turned out the way it did. The series, created by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, is inspired by the interconnected Stephen King universe.

In the teaser, Lost’s Terry O’Quinn’s gentle voiceover describes the “original sin” of Castle Rock, a fictional town in which a number of King’s novels are set, including The Dead Zone, Cujo, and The Dark Half. Castle Rock will feature themes and characters from across King’s work, as well as a few new characters created just for the TV series and several actors from previous iterations of King adaptations, like Sissy Spacek (Carrie) and Bill Skarsgård (2017’s It), playing new roles.

The series will likely include plenty more references for King fans to uncover. The first season will be a self-contained story in which lawyer Henry Deaver (Andre Holland) returns to his hometown of Castle Rock to represent Skarsgård’s character, who is imprisoned at Shawshank Prison.

During New York Comic Con last fall, executive producer Dustin Thomason said Castle Rock’s second season will feature an entirely new cast and storyline. Its first season also stars Scott Glenn as Alan Pangborn, Spacek as Henry Deaver’s adoptive mother Ruth, and O’Quinn as town figurehead Dale Lacy, although Entertainment Weekly reports that he never appears on-screen.

The series will premiere on Hulu on July 25th.

Back in 2014, Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz announced that he had decided to recut the show’s fourth season Netflix revival, abandoning its original structure — with each episode focused on a single character — and replacing it with a version that intercuts all the characters’ stories chronologically. It wasn’t clear at the time whether that edit would ever be made available to the public, but today, Hurwitz finally announced the new version’s Netflix release date: May 4th. As in, this Friday.

In a statement released on the official Arrested Development Netflix account, Hurwitz announced that the new season would be called Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences. The original season, which premiered on Netflix in 2013, was 15 episodes long; the new cut will be 22 shorter episodes. Hurwitz describes the original segmented style as “akin to eating some toast, then some bacon — maybe a sliced tomato followed by some turkey, and realizing, ‘Hey, I think I just had a BLT.’” The episodes in the remixed season will only be 20 minutes long, and they will create a more “interwoven” narrative.

Hurwitz also writes that the long-awaited fifth season of the series will have a release date “soon. Like real soon. Like, if you knew when, you would not be wrong to be thinking ‘why are we all just hearing this now?’”

Because Arrested Development was a cult favorite when Fox canceled the show in 2006, fans were understandably divided on the fourth season’s unexpected narrative style. The remixed version could placate viewers hankering for a version of the season that feels more like the show they originally embraced.

“I’m really excited about the final result,” Hurwitz writes. “It’s funny in a whole new way and I believe it creates a really entertaining and hilarious new experience for the ‘viewer.’ And I only call you that because I don’t know how to pronounce your last name.”

Later this year, Amazon plans to launch Prime Book Box, a monthly book subscription service for kids. For $22.99 per month, subscribers will receive a box of four board books (for ages two and younger) or two hardcover picture books or novels (for ages three to 12). This is Amazon’s first monthly subscription service to offer physical books, TechCrunch reports.

Prime Book Box will be available on a one-, two-, or three-month basis, depending on what plan the subscriber chooses. The available books will be divided into four different age groups for readers: birth to two years, three to five years, six to eight years, and nine to 12 years.

Amazon Books editors will choose books for the selected age range, from “classics” to “hidden gems,” and they will use your Amazon purchase history to avoid including books you’ve already purchased. Each month, subscribers will receive an email preview of the box, and they can choose to swap some books from a short list of alternate selections before the box is shipped.

Although Amazon says this is a way to “inspire a love of reading,” as TechCrunch points out, it’s also a way for the company collect more data — even from young children who don’t have their own Amazon accounts. If you have more than one child, you’ll have to sign up for multiple Book Box subscriptions.

As with Amazon’s previous rollouts, notably with its Echo products, the service is currently only available by invitation for Prime members. You can request an invitation here.

For the first time since advocating for the prosecution of Harvey Weinstein, the Time’s Up collective has singled out an alleged abuser: R&B star Robert Kelly. Women of Color of Time’s Up, a subcommittee of the larger group specifically organizing around issues that affect women and girls of color, released a statement this morning announcing their support of #MuteRKelly, an online campaign asking Live Nation and Sony Music to cancel R. Kelly’s tour dates and drop his recording contract. Women of Color of Time’s Up, which includes Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rimes, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, are also asking other “corporations and venues,” including Kelly’s record label RCA Records, to cut ties with the singer.

Over the course of nearly two decades, Kelly has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, statutory rape, aggravated assault, and harassment. Journalist Jim DeRogatis at the Chicago Sun-Times first broke the story in 2000 that Kelly had been accused of statutory rape with girls as young as 15. Allegations against Kelly continued to surface, including a bombshell interview with DeRogatis in the Village Voice in 2013, but despite multiple lawsuits against him, the singer’s career remained relatively stable. Last summer, DeRogatis published yet another report in BuzzFeed that Kelly was holding very young women against their will in a “cult,” deciding things like what they wore and when they went to the bathroom.

View Link

Although sexual assault convictions are difficult to come by in general — Bill Cosby was found guilty of sexual assault last week after decades of inaction and accusations from 60 people — R. Kelly’s alleged victims are overwhelmingly young black women and girls, who have seen little, if any, support from the institutions meant to protect them. In that 2013 Village Voice interview, DeRogatis said, “The saddest fact I’ve learned is nobody matters less to our society than young black women. Nobody.”

The statement from the Women of Color of Time’s Up asks readers to “insist on a world in which women of all kinds can pursue their dreams free from sexual assault, abuse and predatory behavior.

“As Women of Color within Time’s Up, we recognize that we have a responsibility to help right this wrong. We intend to shine a bright light on our WOC sisters in need. It is our hope that we will never feel ignored or silenced ever again.”

You can read the full letter at The Root.

Update (4:00 PM EDT): A spokesperson for R. Kelly has given the following statement to BuzzFeed: “R. Kelly supports the pro-women goals of the Time’s Up movement. We understand criticizing a famous artist is a good way to draw attention to those goals — and in this case, it is unjust and off-target.”

Adi Shankar has an idea to help The Simpsons deal with the criticism surrounding Apu. The Castlevania producer just launched a screenwriting competition that asks competitors to write a new Simpsons episode centered around Apu in a way that “subverts him, pivots him, intelligently writes him out, or evolves him in a way that takes a mean spirited mockery and transforms him into a kernel of truth wrapped in funny insight aka actual satire.”

The contest, called “Crowdsourcing the cure for The Simpsons,” is free and open to anyone, but Shankar asks some writers to consider whether they’re the best people to address the controversy. “If you don’t have any experience with Indian culture in America then you may not have the perspective and experience to write well on this topic,” the contest description reads.

Shankar’s contest is part of an ongoing discussion about the writing and voicing of Apu, an Indian convenience store owner with a heavy accent. Last year, comedian Hari Kondabolu released The Problem with Apu, a documentary that argued Apu was a problematic caricature — a South Asian character designed by white men and voiced by a white man, in a TV landscape with very little South Asian representation. The Simpsons finally responded to the criticism earlier this month with a dismissive episode that blew off the issue as fundamentally unresolvable and out of the hands of the show’s producers and writers.

Unfortunately, Simpsons creator Matt Groening doesn’t seem to think anything needs to change either. In a USA Today interview last week, when asked if he thought Apu was offensive, Groening said, “Not really. I’m proud of what we do on the show. And I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended.”

Well, that seals it. Matt Groening finally responded & sounds like every other troll on the internet who didn’t see the documentary. No one is offended by this character. It was, at times, insulting & was frustrating to many of us who were solely represented by that one image. https://t.co/AfYNAeaU7Z
— Hari Kondabolu (@harikondabolu) April 30, 2018

Hank Azaria, who voices Apu, has seemed the most responsive to criticism, saying last week that he was “willing to step aside” and let someone else take over the character.

Shankar’s contest will be judged by a panel of “South Asians and other minorities who work in entertainment.” The deadline to enter is June 30th, 2018. A winner will be announced on August 17th, after which Shankar says he will take the winning script to the Simpsons writers’ room and Fox, and ask them to make it an official episode and hire the winning writer full time. If Fox rejects the episode, Shankar says he will finance and produce it himself as part of his Bootleg Universe video series.

Last night on The Late Show, Hank Azaria addressed the controversy surrounding The Simpsons’ Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a character he voices that has been accused of being a racist caricature. In response to Stephen Colbert’s question about what should happen to the character, Azaria mentioned the need for more diversity in the writers’ room, and said he was “perfectly willing to step aside or help transition it to something new.”

“The most important thing is, we have to listen to South Asian, Indian people in this country when they talk about how they feel and what they think about this character,” he said.

Azaria’s statements are a departure from The Simpsons’ own dismissive response to criticism earlier this month. In an episode called “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” Lisa, who is often charged with being the show’s voice of reason, says, “Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?” before the camera pans to a framed photo of Apu signed “Don’t have a cow!” Azaria told Colbert he wasn’t involved with the voicing or writing of that episode.

After that episode aired, Simpsons showrunner Al Jean tweeted that he would “continue to try to find an answer that is popular and more important right.”

.@TheSimpsons I truly appreciate all responses pro and con. Will continue to try to find an answer that is popular & more important right
— Al Jean (@AlJean) April 13, 2018

Criticism surrounding Apu, an Indian who owns the Kwik-E-Mart and speaks with a thick accent, escalated last year when truTV released a documentary by comedian Hari Kondabolu called The Problem with Apu. “Everything with Apu is like this running joke,” Kondabolu said in an interview with The New York Times. “And the running joke is that he’s Indian.”

Fans have responded by suggesting that the solution to the problem is much simpler than imagined. “Do you know how easy it is to put this to bed?” said one. “Really. Just saying, “Hey, we understand that this was hurtful now. It’s not what we wanted, but that’s what it is. We apologize, and are going to learn to create something less hurtful to many of our fans.” This is the wrong battle.”

Azaria, who has voiced Apu since the show’s first season, has briefly addressed the documentary already. In response to a question from a TMZ reporter last year, he said, “I think the documentary made some interesting points and gave us a lot to think about… It’s an important conversation and definitely one worth having.”

On a recent Sunday, creative director Jason Debiak was having breakfast with his family in New Jersey, when something strange happened.

“I was having an adorable breakfast with my family, my 2-year-old daughter and my wife,” he says. “Something came up [on my phone] and I usually try not to check my email, but I checked my email and it said, ‘You have 10 new matches on Match.com.’ I was like… what?”

Debiak’s long-forgotten — and, he assumed, long-deleted — dating profile from over a decade ago had suddenly been reactivated. “I log in, and there I am, from 15 years prior, with less gray hair,” he said. “And my whole profile is there, everything.” Judging by the messages he received, Debiak says it seemed like the account had been reopened for about a week.

“I contacted customer service, and they said, ‘Oh, we’re sorry you got email notifications. We’ll turn off email notifications,’” Debiak said. “And I was like, ‘No, you don’t understand. Not only do I not want email notifications — I don’t want to be on your website, ever.’”

“I don’t want to be on your website, ever”

A Match Group spokesperson confirmed that a “limited number” of old accounts had been accidentally reactivated recently and that any account affected received a password reset. Match.com’s current privacy statement, which was last updated in 2016, says that the company can “retain certain information associated with your account” even after you close it. But that Match Group spokesperson also told The Verge that the company plans to roll out a new privacy policy “in the next month or so,” in order to comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); under the new policy, all those years-old accounts will be deleted. The Verge has requested clarification on which accounts will qualify for deletion, and what “deletion” will specifically entail, but has not received a response as of press time.

In the past, it hasn’t been uncommon for dating websites to use and retain your data for research, marketing, or, as Match.com’s current privacy policy says, “record-keeping integrity.” In a 2009 ComputerWorld report, eHarmony’s then-VP of technology Joseph Essas said, “We have an archiving strategy, but we don’t delete you out of our database. We’ll remember who you are.” Herb Vest, the founder and CEO of the now-defunct dating website True.com, said in the same report: “The data just sits there.” Even if the profile reactivations were just a glitch in Match’s system, they’re a stark reminder that the internet doesn’t easily forget.

Although there is no federal data destruction law in the US, 32 states — including Texas, where Match Group is headquartered — have data disposal laws that require “entities to destroy, dispose, or otherwise make personal information unreadable or undecipherable.” In addition to that, 13 states, also including Texas, have laws that require private companies to maintain reasonable cybersecurity practices. If that sounds vague, that’s because it is. “A lot of this is still, I don’t want to call it amorphous, but it’s still being defined, frankly,” explains Scott Shackelford, an associate professor and Cybersecurity Program chair at Indiana University-Bloomington. “What ‘reasonable’ is, is a moving target.”

But that doesn’t change the fact that many former Match.com users feel blindsided by this, not to mention misled by Match. It’s not clear how many people saw their years-dormant Match.com profiles reactivated recently, but it’s not hard to find complaints about the ghost profiles online.

First launched in 1993, Match.com has since become a dating behemoth. Its parent company, Match Group, now owns dating apps like OkCupid, PlentyofFish, and Tinder. (It reportedly tried to buy Bumble last year, and it’s now embroiled in a messy lawsuit with the app involving trade secrets and intellectual property.) OkCupid allows users to delete or disable their accounts but still retains data. PlentyofFish and Tinder’s privacy policies both claim to retain data “only as long as we need it for legitimate business purposes and as permitted by applicable legal requirements.” Tinder, like Match.com. also notes it will “retain certain data” after you close your account.

“There probably are good reasons to keep deleted profiles for some period of time — for example, to prevent or detect repeat users or fake users, etc,” Albert Gidari, consulting director of privacy at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society, wrote in an email. “But that doesn’t mean forever.”

Data is forever

Rob P., who had been an active online dater since around 2005, recently had his Match.com profile resurface, even though he’s engaged now. And his experience with Match.com’s customer service after the fact was frustrating. He just wanted someone to delete his profile, but no one would do it. “They kept using terminology that was… not saying it’s permanently deleted, just ‘unviewable’ or ‘inaccessible,’” he says. “And I kept saying, ‘It needs to be deleted.’”

Match Group has run into complaints about this before. A class action lawsuit filed in 2010 by former subscribers claimed that Match.com was trying to deceive users by keeping inactive and fraudulent accounts viewable. “With regard to inactive members (i.e., members who have cancelled their subscriptions and / or allowed their subscriptions to lapse),” the filing reads, “Match takes virtually no action to remove these profiles (that remain on the system, are searchable by members, appear as and are in fact counted among Match’s ‘active members’) for months and sometimes years after the individuals have become inactive.” The suit was dismissed in 2012 after US District Judge Sam Lindsay found that Match’s user agreement didn’t require it to remove these profiles.

In 2015, California resident Zeke Graf filed a class action lawsuit against Match claiming the company was knowingly violating a California civil code which requires every dating service contract to include a statement allowing the buyer to cancel their subscription. That lawsuit was later voluntarily dismissed by Graf.

In an increasingly privacy-conscious world, the sudden zombie appearance of an old social media profile would be an unnerving experience for anyone. But online dating, in particular, puts people in a vulnerable position, often encouraging users to reveal as much of themselves as possible. “You’re filling out questionnaires about your beliefs and feelings and who you are as a person,” Rob P. says. “Hopefully the algorithm uses that information to match you up with the best compatible mate, but it’s scary to think they’re holding on to that data even after you close your account.”

Ex-user Katie Storms also saw her account, which she deactivated in 2014, pop up again this month. She’s concerned about data privacy, but also the more immediate impact that a new dating profile could have on her current relationship. “Thankfully I am married to an incredible man who, I immediately told him, ‘Hey, this happened, and I’m concerned about it,’ and we walked through it together,” she says. “I can’t imagine… not that I want to be married to anyone who wouldn’t be understanding about it, but what if you were?”

View Link

Jason Debiak also told his wife about the rogue profile immediately, but he later found out that some of her friends had seen it, and thought it was evidence of something more sinister. “That would’ve caused quite an issue if I hadn’t seen those emails,” he says.

Zombie profiles can also affect current users, who, again, are putting themselves in a vulnerable position, only to be confronted with people who aren’t actually looking to date. “I felt like it was a little bit of a violation of privacy for me, and misleading to the people who are on Match.com right now looking for people,” Storms says. “I don’t blame those people who saw my profile and winked at me, but I’m sorry, I’m happily married.”

Data retention policies, especially in the US, can vary from company to company. Match Group owns data from thousands of users, and — as recent scandals and controversies regarding the consequences of user data retention have taught us — it doesn’t have to be completely transparent about what it’s doing with that data. But these reactivations are a reminder that the internet has a long memory, and the burden often falls on the user to be mindful of what they share. “Obviously we need more transparency and control over our own data,” Rob P. says. “But it feels like uncharted territory.”
