It tasted almost exactly like the marshmallows in a box of Lucky Charms, but it looked like a hollowed-out skeleton cube. Or an octagon. Or any shape I could think of, really. And I could print another one whenever I wanted to.

3D Systems’s new ChefJet and ChefJet Pro are 3D printers that print real, edible, delicious candies of varying shapes and sizes — 3D Systems says they’re the world’s first 3D food printers. The ChefJet uses a combination of sugar and water that actually creates a sugar frosting in real time, albeit as slowly as you’d expect from a 3D printer. Candies can be made in incredibly complex shapes, some of which are even hollow skeletons that hold little spheres — all edible, of course.

The regular ChefJet is only capable of printing in black and white, but can still produce several different flavors. It’s relatively large for a kitchen appliance, but is still small enough to fit on a countertop. 3D Systems expects it to retail in the sub-$5,000 price range.

Printing color candy costs a little more

The larger ChefJet Pro is where things get interesting. It’s capable of printing the same shapes as the regular ChefJet, but adds in an inkjet head filled with food coloring instead of printer ink. The inkjet is capable of printing patterns that can get so complex they’re actually reminiscent of china glassware. That addition bumps up the price: 3D Systems is expecting it to cost closer to $10,000.

A 3D Systems representative said the ChefJet Pro is even capable of printing out bride and groom models with detailed faces and clothing, like those you see on the top of a traditional wedding cake, but customizable to a face or outfit of your choice. Speaking of cake, there were several of them on display — the lattices (printed by both models of the ChefJet) were even sturdy enough to act as a base for one cake was that was several feet tall and had two levels of 3D printed support.

The ChefJet and ChefJet Pro printers are expected to be released in the second half of 2014, but if you live in California, packages of the candies are available for purchase on Cubify right now. They’re delicious.

Sprint will soon launch a competitive new way for you to save on your monthly phone bill. According to a source familiar with the service, the new option will be called a ‘Framily’ plan — no, that’s not a typo — and it lets you share an account ID with up to ten of your friends (get it?) who are also on Sprint, while still being billed separately. The plans will start at $55 per month for an individual line, which gets you 1GB of data and unlimited talk and texting. Data hungry users can bump that up to 3GB for an extra $10 or to unlimited data for an extra $20 monthly.

What makes Sprint’s Framily plans interesting is that the more lines there are on your account, the lower the prices get. Each line added to the account cuts $5 off, all the way down to $25 a month, provided you can find seven or more willing friends who are also on Sprint. It bears repeating that despite the family implication and shared account ID, everyone will still be billed separately.

The plans do not have a two-year contract or offer a device subsidy, so unless you want to use Sprint’s One-Up annual trade-in plan, you have to pay full retail price for your phone. Users who have the unlimited data add-on will also be able to do a device trade-in after one year.

T-Mobile has been very aggressive in offering lower cost rate plans, but this new option from Sprint will be different than anything else available from US carriers. Sprint and T-Mobile occupy a distant third and fourth place behind market leaders Verizon and AT&T, so it’s not a surprise to see that they are the ones coming out with innovative wireless plans that cost less than traditional options. We expect Sprint to announce the new Framily plans in the very near future, and it will be interesting to see what T-Mobile will announce at its press conference tomorrow.

A Sprint representative declined to comment on the rumored new plans.

Dan Seifert contributed to this report

Thanks, tipster!

Update: Sprint CEO Dan Hesse just confirmed that the Framily plans will be coming to Sprint during an investor conference. The plans will be available to both new and existing customers starting on January 10th. Current customers that are on a traditional Sprint plan with a contract can sign up for the new Framily plan, but there will be a $15 per month surcharge until their contract is satisfied.

Rugged gadgets are all over the place at CES 2014, and Fugoo is getting in on the action with its new line of water-resistant Bluetooth 4.0 speakers: the Fugoo Style, Sport, and Tough. Fugoo’s speakers set themselves apart with a two-part design made of an inner “core” — the actual speaker — with a swappable, durable outer “jacket” to protect it. For now, there are three different jackets, although Fugoo plans to announce other varieties later this year.

Fugoo says the Tough jacket is “virtually indestructible”

The names of each jacket pretty aptly describe them. The $199 Style is the slimmest, lightest, and best-looking of the three, but also offers the least protection against drops. The $229 Sport offers more protection than the Style while still maintaining a slim form and comes with a wireless smart remote, and the $229 Tough is fittingly tank-like — Fugoo calls it “virtually indestructible.” Each jacket is also available separately — you only have to take the core speaker out and put it into the new speaker jacket. All three of Fugoo’s jackets protect the internal core from drops to varying degrees (with the Tough obviously being well, the toughest), but they all offer the same level of dust and water resistance: any Fugoo can be submerged in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. This means that you can take a Fugoo with you to the beach or park and just rinse any dirt off at the end of the day.

Because all three models use the same core speaker, they all offer the same audio quality and battery life, which Fugoo says can last up to 40-hours. The core speaker’s six drivers provide 360-degree sound, and their symmetrical positioning cancels the pesky vibrations that make many similarly sized portable speakers prone to walking across a surface. The speaker can also act as a speakerphone thanks to a built-in microphone.

Fugoo is also offering a few accessories to expand the ways and places you can use its speakers. The bottoms of the Sport and Tough jackets have a spot to connect one of three mounts which let the speaker attach to a bike, backpack, tripod, or even strap on to something like a tree. Fugoo is also making a wearable, fully waterproof Bluetooth smart remote with a lanyard and watch strap that can control your music and even activate Siri or Google Now — but the killer feature is the bottle opener on its back.
