I had high hopes for the RTX 4070 Ti Super after the RTX 4070 Super impressed me earlier this month. Nvidia's first RTX 40-series Super card provided some solid performance boosts at both 4K and 1440p - around 15 percent and 17 percent, respectively. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about the RTX 4070 Ti Super.

While the pricing remains the same $799 as the original RTX 4070 Ti it's replacing, so does the performance. At 1440p on the RTX 4070 Ti Super, I initially found nearly 3 percent better performance over the original RTX 4070 Ti and around 5 percent at 4K. Nvidia had promised 10 percent, so something had clearly gone wrong here.

When I reviewed the RTX 4070 last year, there were a few things that held it back. The original card shipped with 12GB of VRAM, its 4K performance didn't quite match the RTX 3080, and overall, it didn't feel like a big generational leap. The RTX 4070 Super corrects most of those issues at the same $599 price point.

While Nvidia has stuck to the same 192-bit memory bus and 12GB of G6X memory with the RTX 4070 Super, the big bump to CUDA cores puts its performance a lot closer to the RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4070 Super feels like a generational leap, delivering even better 1440p and 4K performance than before.

This year's long-awaited flagship graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia aren't normal. Perhaps we shouldn't expect them to be. In 2020, AMD finally showed it had the potential to catch up to Nvidia in raw gaming performance, and of course, Nvidia desperately wants to maintain that lead.

Inflated more than inflation

But as a result, both companies' new GPUs have bloated in a way we've never seen. They've inflated more than inflation itself. They're suddenly both far more expensive and physically huge in a way we haven't seen this decade if ever.

Here, I made a chart to show you:
