He's returned a few times since, but the first trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate reunites Schwarzenegger's T-800 robot with Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor. The movie will introduce new characters to the franchise, including Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire) as a new hybrid between terminator and human. The Terminator franchise is officially coming back. According to Variety, Deadpool's Tim Miller will direct the film, with Terminator 2 director James Cameron returning as a producer. The untitled sequel will hit theaters on July 26th, 2019.

Cameron's return to the franchise is certainly a move aimed at revitalizing it after a series of ill-advised sequels such as 2009's Terminator: Salvation and 2015's nostalgia-driven Terminator Genisys. Deadline is reporting that James Cameron is engaged in early talks to return to his Terminator franchise, not as a director, but in a godfather role for Deadpool's Tim Miller, who would direct a "reboot and conclusion" to the franchise.

This is interesting news, but should also be taken with a grain of salt. Cameron only regains some of the rights to Terminator in 2019, and a lot can happen in the film industry in two years. Cameron is currently working on a four sequels to 2009's Avatar, which are expected to come out between 2018 and 2023, while Miller could easily pick up a different project between now and then.
