The Apple TV has been down a rocky update road the last two weeks, with problems surrounding the 4.4 update prompting a bugfix that itself was pulled and re-released after bricking devices. Now Apple's revealed both updates also have issues updating themselves to newer versions of the software, and has released 4.4.2 to (hopefully) right all wrongs. Unfortunately, the update requires the home media streamer to be wiped completely, so get ready to enter your Netflix and iTunes information all over again.

When Apple TV was updated last week to version 4.4, it brought a lot of new features, but some users were unexpectedly being asked to connect to iTunes in order to update. Apple's original 4.4.1 patch to solve that problem exacerbated things by actually bricking devices, so it was quickly pulled - but it's now been re-released and seems to be working fine. You may now safely update your Apple TV.
