Netflix has just launched its subscription streaming service in the UK and Ireland. Anyone can pick up a month's free trial now, which can be extended for £5.99 or €6.99 per month after that. Complete series of TV shows are available to stream immediately, including US content like Prison Break and local UK produce like The Only Way is Essex. That is, of course, in addition to a wide library of movies you can stream. Content variety is still not as broad as Netflix would like it, but the company promises that new material will be continuously added to the available catalog. We suspected the UK launch of Netflix's streaming service was near when the app showed up on the PlayStation 3, and we've now received multiple reports that the service is in fact live for PS3 owners. It's priced at £5.99 per month with the first month free, and the app is now also appearing on UK-based Apple TVs - though it appears to not be active on that platform just yet.

Netflix has secured an exclusive multi-year licensing agreement with Lionsgate UK - a subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment - to stream its first-run feature films to UK and Ireland subscribers during the pay-TV window. That means only Netflix subscribers will have subscription streaming access to films such as The Hunger Games, Stalone's The Expendables 2, and the Dirty Dancing remake within one year of their theatrical releases. Having conquered the US, Canada, and Latin America, Netflix is continuing its international march with the announcement today that it'll offer its subscription service in the UK and Ireland in "early 2012." The plan is to introduce the unlimited Watch Instantly movie and TV show streaming service with what's described as a wide array of content, though specifics remain light on the ground. As to pricing, there will be "one low monthly subscription price." We'll have to wait until closer to this first European launch to find out exactly how much it will cost and which of Netflix's content partners are on board.
