<p>Apple isn't just preparing for <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/28/2594766/apple-ios-5-1-beta-ipad-2-4">new iPads</a> and <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/29/2595303/next-gen-apple-tv-codename-is-j33-according-to-ios-5-1-beta-release">Apple TVs</a> with iOS 5.1, there's a new iPhone on the block too. Code strings from within the new beta of <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.theverge.com/products/brands/apple/8">Apple's</a> mobile OS have revealed an iPhone 5,1 codename, which falls right in line with the company's internal numbering scheme and represents the first evidence of the inevitable iPhone 5's arrival. Of course, some basic software support in a beta isn't exactly the most reliable of predictors as to how far out a device launch may be, but at least you now know that Apple's laying the foundations.</p><p><img alt="Iphone5_1_ref" class="photo" src="https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/chorus/assets/806595/iphone5_1_ref.png"><br id="1322550841325"></p>

<p>Apple's iOS 5.1 beta revealed a new iPad earlier this evening, but it's not done spilling secrets yet. Now, <em>9to5Mac</em> reports that the codename of the next Apple TV has also been found. The magic alphanumeric is "J33", which puts the device in good company indeed:<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/22/2580790/apple-next-ipad-retina-display-evidence"> "J2,"</a> as you'll recall, is pegged as the next-generation iPad. This is the same <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/10/11/2483042/new-apple-tv-version-found-in-ios-5-filesystem">"Apple TV 3,1"</a> spotted last month, by the way. It's hard to say what we're really looking at with only a few letters and digits at our disposal, but we wouldn't bet on a <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/10/25/2511956/apple-tv-rumors-snowball">full-sized television</a>; rather, expect Apple's dual-core A5 chip <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/14/exclusive-the-future-of-the-ipad-2-iphone-5-and-apple-tv-and/">to enable 1080p video streaming</a> and gaming on your existing TV set.</p>

<p>We're hearing that the first beta of iOS 5.1 is just now making its merry way to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch developers, and it's already borne some fruit - namely, a string of code that references a brand new product, the "iPad 2,4". In case you're not familiar, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/products/brands/apple/8" class="sbn-auto-link">Apple</a> typically provides such product codenumbers in new releases of the software, though it's unlikely that the iPad 2,4 is a next-generation <a href="http://www.theverge.com/tag/ipad-3">iPad 3</a>. <em>9to5Mac</em>, which found the digits, speculates that it probably refers to <a target="_blank" href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/14/apples-sprint-compatible-ipad-appears-ready-and-waiting-for-launch/">a soon-to-appear Sprint version of the existing machine</a>. We'd like to think that the number-three US carrier would get a special nod from Apple, after <a href="http://www.theverge.com/apple/2011/10/3/2466844/sprint-iphone-to-be-a-multibillion-dollar-gamble-says-wsj">risking so mu …</a></p>
