Now that Apple has finished announcing its slate of new M4-equipped Mac computers, we've finally been able to see them in person. The Verge's Vjeran Pavic got some hands-on time with the new products and took some gorgeous photos that you can peruse below.

I'm blown away by how small the new Mac Mini is; the old Mac Mini, which was already small, seems giant in comparison. Vjeran tells me that, in person, the smaller Mac Mini is cute but that it's "more like a mini Mac Studio than a mini Mac Mini." He also says there's no way to reach the power button, which is on the underside of the computer, without lifting it up.

Apple has now revealed the entirety of its M4 Mac lineup. It includes a new entry-level MacBook Pro with M4 for $1,599, as well as the step-up M4 Pro (or M4 Max) models in 14- and 16-inch sizes, which once again start at $1,999 and $2,499, respectively. We’re also getting a new 24-inch iMac with M4, plus an updated Mac Mini with an incredibly small build and an M4 chip. Preorders for the desktop machines start at $1,299 and $599, respectively, and all of the new hardware launches on November 8th.

Besides faster processors, a common theme among the 2024 Macs is that they all start with more RAM to aid the Apple Intelligence experience arriving as part of macOS Sequoia 18.1. Apple doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB on the entry-level M4 MacBook Pro, the M4 iMac, and the M4 Mac Mini. The MacBook Pros with M4 Pro, meanwhile, now offer 18GB as opposed to 24GB.

Most of the new machines look familiar otherwise, with the exception of the M4 Mac Mini. The new model is considerably smaller than the M2 Mini from last year, and features a reshuffled I/O configuration — the front has a 3.5mm audio jack and two USB-C / Thunderbolt ports, while the rear gets three additional USB-C ports in addition to a gigabit ethernet and HDMI port. However, the base M4 Mini still uses Thunderbolt 4, while the M4 Pro model gets Thunderbolt 5.

The same Thunderbolt disparity is true between the M4 and M4 Pro MacBook Pros, though all three get upgraded 12-megapixel webcams with support for Apple’s Desk View mode, along with optional nano-texture displays for reducing glare. The iMac looks the same compared to its predecessor, but also gets the 12-megapixel camera bump and a few new colors. We haven’t tested the new M4 MacBooks, Mac Minis, or iMac (yet), but if you fancy yourself an early adopter, there are a lot of preorder options to consider.

Where to preorder the MacBook Pro with M4

The base M4 MacBook is still only available in a 14-inch configuration, but it now comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD at its $1,599 starting price. Apple also threw in an extra USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 port on the right side and added space black as a color option. Apple is accepting preorders right now ahead of the laptop’s November 8th release date.

You can upgrade to 1TB of storage for an extra $200 before checkout or 2TB of storage for an additional $400. The same for the RAM; you can get 24GB for another $200 or 32GB for $400. You can also opt for a nano-texture display that reduces screen reflectivity for another $150.

14-inch MacBook Pro with M4

The entry-level MacBook Pro with M4 starts with 16GB of RAM — double that of its predecessor — and a 512GB SSD for the same starting price of $1,599. It also gets a third USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 port and comes in a new space black option.

You can now preorder the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro (12-core CPU and 16-core GPU), 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage from Apple for $1,999. Stepping up to the 14-core CPU / 20-core GPU version of the M4 Pro chip is an added $200. You can also get a 1TB SSD for $200, 2TB for $600, or 4TB for $1,200. Doubling the RAM to 48GB is another $400.

You can also upgrade the new MacBook Pro to an M4 Max chip. The 14-core CPU / 32-core GPU version is an $800 upgrade and comes with 36GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD to start. You can also preorder a model with a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU for an extra $1,100. Going with that configuration increases starting RAM to 48GB, plus further upgrade options of 64GB for another $200 or 128GB for an extra $1,000. It’s also the only way to get 8TB of storage, which is an extra $2,200.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is even pricier, naturally. It starts at $2,499 from Apple with a 14-core / 20-core M4 Pro chip, 24GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD with the same RAM and upgrade options as the 14-inch model. The M4 Max model starts you out with 14 CPU cores, 32 GPU cores, 36GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage for $3,499, with the same SSD upgrades but no option to increase memory. If you want additional RAM, you’ll need the $3,999 model with the 16-core / 40-core M4 Max, which starts with 48GB of RAM and is upgradeable to either 64GB or 128GB.

You can get the glare-reducing nano-textured display in both the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations for an extra $150, and both are available in space black and silver.

14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 12-core / 16-core M4 Pro chip starts with 24GB of RAM — a 6GB increase over the prior generation. It also has a 512GB SSD, three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, an optional nano-texture display, and a 12-megapixel webcam.

The iMac comes with a Magic Keyboard and your choice of a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad (the latter of which costs $50 extra), all of which now feature USB-C ports. It will be available on November 8th, but you can preorder it now from Apple in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver, with the base model starting at $1,299. It’s also up for preorder in select configurations at Amazon for the same price or at Best Buy for $50 off with a My Best Buy Plus or Total membership, which start at $50 a year.

The entry-level version offers a pair of Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports, along with an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU. It also offers 16GB of RAM, but you can upgrade to 24GB for $200 more. The iMac also features 256GB of storage by default, but an extra $200 gets you 512GB of storage, while $400 more gets you 1TB of storage. For another $200, you can add nano-textured glass, which helps scatter light and minimize screen glare.

As for the model with the M4 Pro chip, you can preorder it from Apple, Amazon, and Best Buy starting at $1,399 with a 12-core CPU and a 16-core GPU, 24GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Memory upgrades are similarly pricey, with 48GB adding $400 to the total and 64GB adding $600.

Both the M4 and M4 Pro Mac Minis allow you to upgrade to 10-gigabit ethernet for an extra $100, too. There’s only one color (silver), by the way, and neither package includes a mice or keyboard. Both will start shipping on November 8th.

Apple has just announced that 16GB of RAM is now the minimum for the M2 and M3 MacBook Air, giving the laptops the same RAM bump as all of the company's other new computers this week. The cheapest MacBook Air still starts at $999.

Before this, it was a $200 upsell to get a MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM. Now, that's no longer the case, bringing Apple's cheapest laptop more in line with its competitors. Apple made a similar move in 2016 when it made 8GB the minimum for the 13-inch MacBook Air and discontinued the 4GB 11-inch version months later.
