It's really happening. Apple will hold an event on October 23rd to announce the long-rumored, smaller iPad. At least, that's what an invitation just sent out from Apple PR suggests. An iPad with a smaller screen size has been rumored for months, and the company almost certainly wants to announce the product before the holiday buying season to compete with cheaper tablets like the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 - and of course put the hurt on Microsoft's big Surface release.

AllThingsD is reporting that Apple is to unveil its much-rumored iPad mini at an invite-only event on October 23rd. Beyond the date there aren't too many new details to take out from the article; AllThingsD says its sources declined to say where the event will be held.

The Wall Street Journal is this morning citing sources from within Apple's supply chain in asserting that the company has begun production of a new tablet device, which is smaller than its 9.7-inch iPad. Two of the informants claim the new device's screen measures 7.85 inches diagonally - affirming what Bloomberg reported in August - with LG Display and AU Optronics having started manufacturing the LCD panels for it last month. The resolution on this purported new slate is said to be lower than on the latest iPad, but that's to be expected given the 2048 x 1536 Retina resolution on the bigger tablet.

French website Nowhere Else has published a series of pictures purporting to show the design of Apple's much-rumored iPad mini, the supposed 7.85-inch successor to the company's popular iPad. Like the detailed iPhone 5 mockup that we saw at IFA, this unit appears to be some sort of model put together based on existing rumors, with the display in particular looking distinctly non-functional. As Nowhere Else points out, the device's ports and buttons line up with holes seen in a number of leaked accessories, but this in itself is no guarantee of accuracy.

The rumored iPad mini will reportedly launch this October with a 7.85-inch display. Bloomberg has cited four separate sources "familiar with the plans" for the date and screen size. It says that the new, smaller, displays will be manufactured by both LG Display and AU Optronics. Its sources also report that two companies, TPK Holding and Foxconn subsidiary Yeh Cheng, will supply the lamination coating for the device.

There's no denying that the iPad mini is the Apple product rumor of 2012, and the latest batch of hearsay narrows down the form factor of the purported tablet. 9to5Mac received word from unnamed sources that the mini will "look like a large iPod touch" with thin vertical bezels.
