Stevie Bonifield is a news writer here at The Verge and, they say, “I cover a little bit of just about everything, from the FCC to AI shopping tools to Linux.” Before joining our news team, they wrote weekend news for PC Gamer and did reviews, news, features, and guides for Laptop Mag, along with some stories for Tom’s Guide, IGN, TechRadar, and XDA. “I’ve been reading (and watching) The Verge since I was in high school,“ they add, ”so it’s pretty exciting to be part of the team now.“

Outside of writing, Stevie says “I also love gaming, reading, and TTRPGs (tabletop roleplaying games). As you’ll probably be able to tell from my workspace, I’m kind of a total nerd.”

Let’s begin with the basics. Where is your work space located?

My desk and work space are in my bedroom. I share my apartment with a roommate, so we both work from our bedrooms so we don’t distract each other during the day. I don’t really mind not having a separate office — it means I only have to worry about decorating and managing one space instead of two. I recently moved to New Jersey from Pittsburgh, PA, so I’m still getting everything set up here.

Could you tell us about your desk and your chair?

I’m using a VIVO 3-stage adjustable desk with a VIVO 60-inch desktop and a Haworth Breck chair. I got both when I moved last month, so I haven’t been using them for long, but I like them so far.

This is actually a standing desk, which I’ve never used before. I got it so I could have my desk height pretty low — I’m on the shorter side and most desks are too high for me. This one goes all the way down to 24 inches, lower than even I need, which is really nice. The option to use it as a standing desk is a cool perk, even though that isn’t what I bought it for. My cable management under the desk still needs some cleaning up, but I’m working on it! I have a VIVO clamp-on cable management net containing most of it for now.

I like the Haworth Breck so far, but it’s a pretty basic chair. Like my desk, a big part of why I got this one is its height range. It’s extremely difficult for me to find decent desk chairs that go as low as I need them to (without requiring a footrest). This one has a minimum seat height of around 15 inches and has adjustable seat depth, both of which I’ve really appreciated. That said, I wish it had a headrest.

Tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

My setup is a little crazy because I have three different computers running to my two monitors.

My gaming PC lives on the floor under my desk. It’s currently temporarily out of commission because I’m having a hardware issue. Unfortunately, my RAM seems to be on the fritz, which is pretty bad timing considering the current RAM pricing nightmare. Most of it is still working, though! It has an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X CPU, an AMD Radeon RX 6600 GPU, an Asus ROG Strix B650-A motherboard, and a pair of 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM sticks (which apparently need to be replaced, after less than a year of use).

That’s also my Linux PC — it’s currently running Fedora 41 with the Cinnamon desktop environment, but I’m updating to Fedora 43 soon and planning to switch to the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

Hanging off the side of my desk are my work and personal laptops, both the M4 MacBook Air. My laptops are only connected to my left monitor, which is a 27-inch 1440p Viewsonic Omni (VX2728J-2K). My gaming PC is connected to both monitors. I mainly play games on the right monitor since it has better color accuracy. It’s a 27-inch 1440p Asus ROG Strix gaming monitor (XG27ACS).

Neither one of my monitors is anything fancy, but both are good enough for my needs. Between the two, I would probably recommend the ROG one more, although I’m not a huge fan of the buttons being located on the back since I need those to swap input modes so I can switch to my Mac. When I’m working during the day I usually have my work laptop running on the left monitor and my Linux PC on the right monitor. My keyboard and mouse I chose specifically because they make it easy to jump between all my devices.

I’ve reviewed quite a few keyboards, so it’s a little ironic that the one I’m using now I actually haven’t reviewed. It’s the Nuphy Halo75 V2 with Nuphy’s Mint switches. It sounds and feels great, works really smoothly with macOS, and I can jump between my laptops and PC with a quick keyboard shortcut. The battery life could be a bit better, but admittedly I leave the RGB on, so that’s probably not helping. Overall, though, I really like the design and sound quality on the Halo75 — it’s one of the only keyboards I’ve tried that I’m happy with out-of-the-box without making any DIY customizations.

My mouse is actually one of my favorite devices right now. I’ve tested some great gaming mice, but this one is my personal daily driver and not one I reviewed. It’s the Razer Orochi V2, and I got it on sale for $35 on Amazon earlier this year. It’s nothing fancy, but the size and feel are perfect for me. Most gaming mice feel kind of enormous in my hand, but I swear Razer designed the Orochi for my palm specifically. Like my keyboard, it’s also able to jump between a Bluetooth connection and a 2.4GHz dongle. Despite the budget-friendly price, it’s a great mouse.

Razer Orochi V2

Where to Buy:

<strike>$69.99</strike> $34.99 at Amazon

Underneath that I’m currently using a Matrix Blizzard mousepad. I got it on Amazon, but unfortunately, I think it’s sold out now. I wanted something with a little bit of a design going on, but not anything too detailed or distracting. This design just about perfectly fit what I was looking for. I wish it was a tad thicker, but it’s more interesting than a plain black mousepad, and that’s good enough for me.

I have two controllers on my desk, a standard Xbox controller for my Mac and the wired Razer Wolverine V2 for my gaming PC. I don’t normally like wired controllers, but I really love the Wolverine. The clicky buttons on Razer controllers are so satisfying to me, and they tend to offer consistently good performance in my experience. My favorite mobile controller is also from Razer, the Kishi Ultra.

My preferred headphones are my AirPods Pro 3. The ANC and spatial audio is fantastic for watching shows and movies on my laptop (and helps me focus when I’m working). I don’t like wearing earbuds all the time, though, so I also keep a basic pair of on-ear Sony headphones around, the WH-CH250. The audio quality on these isn’t particularly impressive, but they’re super affordable.

Last, but certainly not least, I also have a Razer Seiren V3 Chroma mic off to the side of my desk on a clamp-on mic arm I got on Amazon. I’ve been using the Seiren for a couple years now for gaming and playing Dungeons & Dragons with my online group. The audio quality could be a bit better, but it’s a significant improvement over most built-in headphone mics, and I’ve never had any bugs or issues with it. Notably, it works on Linux for me without needing any tweaks or work-arounds.

That is a great laptop holder you have at the side of your desk. What is it?

I just got that when I moved last month, and it’s one of my favorite additions to my desk setup. It’s a double-decker laptop mount I got for around $30 on Amazon and just clamps onto the side of my desk (no screws necessary!).

MAXECHO Desk Side Storage

Where to Buy:

<strike>$36.99</strike> $31.99 at Amazon

I wanted to free up some desk space, and this lets me keep both of my laptops nearby and out of the way at the same time. I also used a command strip to stick a USB-C hub to the back of the laptop tray, so I can quickly hop between my personal and work laptops on my external monitor by just moving over the USB-C cable and charging cable.

Great wall decorations. Tell us a bit about your Elmville map and what surrounds it.

This is the wall across from my desk that people see when I have my webcam on, so I put all my coolest stuff on it. I’m a huge fan of Dimension 20 on Dropout, so I immediately picked up one of those Elmville maps when they released them. For those who haven’t checked out Dimension 20 yet, Elmville is the main setting for Fantasy High, one of the best shows Dropout has to offer, in my humble opinion.

The smaller horizontal picture below the map is actually a page from Dropout’s 2025 Dimension 20 calendar that I got at their Madison Square Garden show last January. It’s a scene from season 2 of Fantasy High, and I just thought the artist did such a great job with it that it deserved to be framed. Off to the right above that one is a print I got from an art convention. It’s not from any show or movie as far as I know; the design just resonated with me.

The two smaller prints above the map are also from art conventions and were made by the same artist, Natasha Tara Petrović. The purple one is some cool Mothman art — I have a soft spot for cryptids and spooky stuff. The blue one is a Dark Souls print that makes the game look way cozier than it is.

And last but not least, I’ve got some Nanoleaf Elements tiles lighting up that wall. These are the first smart lights I’ve ever bought, and they’re pretty cool, especially with the more mellow wood look. I have them set to shift colors and brightness throughout the day.

You’re obviously into Star Wars and other science fiction / fantasy worlds, judging from the toys over your bookcase and the figures on that little shelf. Are you a serious fan or do you just like the genre?

I am a huge Star Wars fan. One of my earliest memories is watching The Phantom Menace on VHS, and I’ve loved the franchise ever since. Obi-Wan is my favorite character, which I’m noticing is a bit obvious in my work space.

The lightsaber above my bookcase is Obi-Wan’s from The Phantom Menace. I’ve had it since probably kindergarten or first grade, so it’s a little beat up. And next to that I’ve got a special edition Obi-Wan Funko Pop. Then above my desk I have a Lego model of Obi-Wan’s Jedi starfighter from Attack of the Clones.

On the shelf below that I’ve managed to squeeze in the Dungeons & Dragons series minifigures I’ve collected (I’m a few shy of the full collection). These shelves ended up being way smaller than expected, so I’m planning to add more so things aren’t quite so cramped. I thought Lego did a great job with these D&D minifigures, though, and would love to see them do more D&D sets. My personal favorite from this series is the dragonborn paladin.

The other Funko Pop next to Obi-Wan is Vi from Arcane, which is a truly phenomenal show and a personal favorite of mine. I’m not much of a Funko Pop person, but I’ll get them from time to time if it’s a character I really like.

I guess I would say I’m a serious sci-fi and fantasy fan, although I tend to connect with specific series or books and stick with those. To go back to the Star Wars example, on one of the lower shelves in my bookcase, I have most of the old Jedi Apprentice books. They’ve gotten pretty hard to find, but I loved them as a kid, so I’m trying to collect them all again.

On the fantasy side of things, I love epic fantasy like Lord of the Rings, but also like some YA books, especially The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson. At the moment, I’m reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree, which is the third book in his Legends & Lattes series. Both are great, although they have drastically different tones.

You also have a rock collection!

I do! Much like a goldfish, it has grown to fill the size of its container, and now it can grow no more. I’ve always had an interest in geology and have had some of the rocks and minerals in that case since I was a kid.

I have a bunch of quartz, a geode, some copper, chalcopyrite, amazonite, dravite, moissanite, a sliver of obsidian, a lump of basalt, some feldspar and sedimentary rocks, and a bunch of smaller tumbled stones. There’s also a chunk of petrified wood in the back that I found in a streambed. My favorites are the chunk of amber in the front and the bismuth above it — I love how bismuth crystals get that neat geometric shape.

Anything else I missed that you’d like to add?

While I don’t use it for work, my Kobo Clara BW e-reader is almost always on my desk. My bookcases are pretty much full (and a bit small — I’m planning to replace them eventually), so I’ve been reading more ebooks over the past year or so.

I switched from a Kindle to a Kobo several months ago and have been loving the Kobo. The display and user experience on the Clara are better than their Kindle counterparts in my experience, and you have more freedom to add books from outside Kobo’s store and back up everything in your library on other devices. My Kobo is in my everyday carry now, although in hindsight, I wish I’d gotten one with a color display.

Kobo Clara BW

Not all of The Verge’s staff live in the US. For example, news editor Dominic Preston is based in London and is, as he says, “responsible for keeping our news coverage ticking over in UK mornings before the US team comes online.” He also curates our new Verge Daily newsletter and covers Android phones, especially all the models that don’t launch in the US.

And outside of work? “I’m a bit of a food obsessive,” he says, “and run a newsletter called Braise where I review London restaurants and cookbooks, and occasionally try my own hand at recipe writing. That means I spend most of my free time cooking, eating, or thinking about food, and so also a decent amount of time in the gym trying to make up for that.”

Where is your workspace located?

This is an office that I share with my partner in our flat in London. It used to be a second bedroom, but now we’ve kitted it out with two desks and a sofa bed for the occasional times we actually have guests to stay. My partner is a PhD student, so her working hours are a bit unpredictable, and split between here and school — which means that 90 percent of the time I’ve got the office to myself.

Could you tell us about your desk(s)?

We both have standing desks. Mine is an Autonomous SmartDesk 2 that’s electronic and automatic, hers an old pneumatic model by Bakker Elkhuizen that they don’t make anymore, which annoys her because it requires a bit of effort to shift up and down. They’re both decorated with self-healing cutting mats, which are still occasionally used for arts and crafts (or as the backdrop for my product photos) but mostly double as giant mouse mats.

You have both a chair and a walking station. What are they, and how well do they work for you?

The chair is a secondhand Herman Miller. It actually used to be my partner’s, while I sat in a big Duelhawk Jet Black PU gaming chair (also no longer available), until we each realized we preferred the other’s seat and swapped. I’m old enough, and sore enough, to be willing to invest a little in the chair I’ll be using every day anyway.

The walking pad is a pretty cheap one from Mobvoi. I actually bought it immediately after reading a piece by my colleague Victoria Song on a different Mobvoi model, and following her advice I’ve made no attempt to touch its smart features or track my workouts; so far it’s served me well. I just use it as slow as it goes, and try to spend as much of every morning walking on it as possible — on a good day I’ll rack up two or three hours of steady walking time; on a bad day I’ll keep putting it off until the coffee hits and never quite get going. Either way, I let myself sit down for the afternoon, which is more likely to be concentrated writing time — I find it hard to do anything too creative or complicated while walking at the same time.

(I know, I know, my cable management isn’t great. I tend to be very tidy, but cables are one of the few things I absolutely don’t have the patience to organize. Sadly, having a standing desk really lays bare those sins, so I may have to force myself to get better about it.)

Here’s the long one: tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

My current setup is slightly awkwardly trapped between my work and personal computers, though I have some plans in the works to improve it.

My work machine is an M2 MacBook Air, which lives propped up on a Ugreen laptop stand. It’s connected to the monitor on the right, a cheap 24-inch QHD Philips model that I bought in 2020.

The confusing part of my setup is that second monitor, an embarrassingly old Acer one. That’s because I’ve also got a desktop PC that I use outside of work, and that connects to both monitors. At the end of the work day I can flip the MacBook shut, and my personal setup is good to go. It’s all unnecessarily cluttered, though, especially since the MacBook can’t support both external monitors at once, so this year’s big upgrade will probably be a 32-inch 4K monitor to replace the pair of them. I’ll happily take any recommendations from the comments!

My keyboard is the Logitech MX Keys S, which I love. I’m as much of a sucker for a good mechanical board as the next guy, but I love low-profile, full-size keyboards, and good mechanical options in that space are few and far between. I used to use a Hexgears Venture, but I ran it into the ground eventually, and this has served me well since.

Logitech MX Keys S

Where to Buy:

$129.99 at Amazon

$129.99 at Best Buy

$129.99 at Logitech

The mouse is also Logitech, though it isn’t my usual one. I picked up this MX Anywhere 3S a while back to use when I’m traveling to trade shows and product launches, and usually have the larger MX Master 3S on my desk. Sadly the left button on that has given up the ghost, and I’m holding off on replacing it in the hopes that the long-rumored MX Master 4 is about to launch.

Continuing the Logitech theme (I’m just now realizing quite how much of my desk setup was built by them), I have an old Z337 2.1 speaker system that just barely fits on the desk right now (another reason I need to switch to a single monitor), and a Brio 500 webcam that I mostly like for how easy it is to flip the built-in privacy shutter.

Everything connects up through an Anker Prime USB hub that’s almost certainly more powerful than I need it to be, but has lots of front-facing USB ports for charging my array of phones, helped by a Xiaomi 50W wireless charging stand, which made more sense when I was using a Xiaomi 14 Ultra as my main phone, but is slightly wasted now — other phones don’t hit that max charging speed.

Anker Prime Charging Docking Station

Where to Buy:

<strike>$269.99</strike> $169.99 at Amazon

<strike>$269.99</strike> $169.99 at Anker (with code WS7DV27TLOVQ)

I tend to have a rotating cast of phones floating around my desk, though this is relatively tidy for me — on messy days I can have up to five or six handsets taking up space. Beyond the Vivo X200 Ultra I used to take these photos, you can see the Fairphone 6 and Huawei Pura X, the two phones I’ve most recently been testing for reviews.

Tell us about your camera collection.

I decided I wanted to try out film photography back in 2019, because I was spending a lot more time writing about cameras as part of my phone reviews and using cameras as part of my job. I figured film would be a good way to make myself learn more about the core principles.

I picked up this Canon EF on eBay. It’s a ’70s SLR with a metal body, which means it’s heavy but is built like a tank — I suspect it will outlast me. It came with a Canon 50mm lens, and I’ve gradually picked up a few cheap options to go with it: a 28mm wide-angle, a 35-70mm for when I want flexibility, and a 70-210mm telephoto I bought specifically for a safari in Kenya a couple years back. I always tell myself I’ll buy better-quality lenses when I’m a good enough photographer to get the most out of them, but I’ll probably just have to bite the bullet eventually.

The microphone living alongside them all is the Rode NT-USB, which I use for podcasts and videos, though I’d like to get a boom arm for it so I can store it around the desk.

You’ve got a lot of toys and games on those shelves! How long have you been collecting them?

This is a really motley assortment of things I’ve collected over the years — some bought, some gifted, some acquired from an old office clearout. There’s more dotted around the rest of my apartment, though my girlfriend is on an (understandable) mission to concentrate it all in the office.

Do you have any favorites?

I’m an absolute Alien obsessive, and I actually have two full-size facehuggers, one plushie and one vinyl, which I adore. There’s also a (sadly not full-size) power loader from Aliens, which I can’t get enough of. Elsewhere in the apartment I have a few original ’90s Street Sharks and Small Soldiers action figures, which are still waiting for the right shelf to display them on.

The board game collection is small but steadily growing. I’ve been playing a lot of Gloomhaven over the last year or so, though Betrayal at House on the Hill is probably the game that gets broken out most often. I’ve also got a healthy collection of D&D 5e and Alien RPG sourcebooks — I can strongly recommend the latter, and that’s not just the fanboy in me speaking!

Okay, tell us about that beautiful cat.

That’s Noodle, one of our two cats (the other is Loaf, and yes, of course they have an Instagram account).

Noodle doesn’t mind when the standing desk rises.

She’s actually a recent addition to my desk. We’ve had the cats for a couple of years, but in the last few months Noodle has decided she really wants to hang out with me while I work, and will happily lie down on my keyboard to do so. We set her up with a little blanket bed instead, which she now sleeps in about half the day, though she still isn’t above a keyboard nap when the mood strikes. The biggest surprise to me is that she doesn’t seem to mind the standing desk going up or down while she’s on it, which I expected would cause a bit of panic.

When you first talked to us about your home office space, it was 2021 and you were working out of a studio apartment. What’s changed?

Yep, we upgraded to a space where I have my own office that isn’t five feet away from my bed. Now it’s 10 feet away. A studio apartment is like a furnace to forge your relationship and your organizational skills. While I succeeded at the relationship part, it was always a challenge to live minimally enough so as to keep things relatively clutter-free, especially since we also had two cats in the mix. Needless to say, I don’t particularly miss it — though my desk setup is close to the previous one as it was before.

Could you tell us about your desk and chair?

The desk that I’m using is a Fully Jarvis Bamboo Standing Desk, and it’s the kind of thing that I love because I never have to think about it, or clean it often. I encourage anyone who’s curious about a standing desk to give it a shot. There are some days / weeks / seasons when I use it while sitting, but it’s nice to have the flexibility to stand if I want to keep my blood flowing. I bought this desk from Fully before that company was acquired by Knoll, which was later acquired by Herman Miller. That said, the Jarvis bamboo standing desk is still available to buy through Herman Miller, but I’m not sure if its build quality and feature set are the same.

As if I haven’t already said Herman Miller enough, the chair is the Sayl from that company. It’s breathable and comfortable.

Here’s the long one: tell us about the various tech devices you’re using. (And please be specific about the model, etc.)

My tech setup has changed a bit since my last WOYD appearance in 2021, but mostly in incremental ways.

I have the same dual monitor setup (the 27-inch Acer Nitro XV272U and the 27-inch LG 27GL650F-B). My webcam got a big improvement. It’s the Insta360 Link. I reviewed it for The Verge back in 2022, but the one I have is personally owned. I don’t take advantage of the gimbal or gesture-based controls as much as I thought I would — I just think it produces a nice, clean image.

I also got a set of Kanto YU2 desktop speakers that have just the kind of minimalist design that I’m looking for. Those connect to my computer via USB, but also have speaker cable inputs for use with a receiver or a record player. Fun fact: they also connect via USB to my Nintendo Switch 2, and I enjoy listening to game audio through them when I’m having a quick handheld gaming session at my desk.

Kinesis Freestyle Edge RGB

Do you prefer the split keyboard?

I’ll never go back to normal keyboards after buying this split ergonomic model from Kinesis. It’s a gaming keyboard, technically, so it has mechanical key switches and programmable LEDs under each key. I couldn’t find another split keyboard suitable for gaming at the time when I bought it (at least, not one with a design that didn’t look atrocious), and I’ve been happy with this model. The downside is that it’s now a lot tougher for me to find merit in laptop keyboards, since they quickly give me wrist pain.

Initially, most people I talk to about these keyboards are of the opinion that they’d never figure out how to use one, and that anyone who does is not from this planet. It does look strange, I’ll give them that. But I think that they’re a more natural way to type, since you can hold your arms and wrists more comfortably instead of contorting them unnaturally to type on a row-based keyboard.

I love that grouping of tchotchkes: the little plastic eggs, the 1960s-style timer, the sand art ornament.

Welcome to the fidget corner of my desk. The blue sphere that looks a little bit like the old AT&T logo spins around on a base. It’s so satisfying to hold and tinker with. The red egg is none other than Silly Putty, which I’m frequently molding into various shapes off-camera during calls. The timer is a Pomodoro timer, and I use it when I need some uninterrupted time to focus on a task (all thanks to this 2022 piece from Victoria Song that inspired me to buy one). Lastly, the sand art display was a gift during Polygon’s 2024 secret santa extravaganza. We all got together over Zoom and had a gift exchange. We had a lot of fun over there. Anyway, the sand art display is so soothing, and I love rotating it to see how the specks fall differently every time. It’s simple, yet beautiful.

Tell us about the poster with the two people (you and your wife?) walking by a decorated wall.

I realized at some point in the last few months that I have an abundance of open wall space and a bunch of photos that I love to look back on. So, why not put more memories up on the wall? The one that I chose here is a photo from our engagement shoot, which was taken in front of a graffiti-covered building that has since been bulldozed. I just thought it was a nice photo back in the day, but it has evolved into a reminder that things can change around us, and sometimes within us, but that we’re committed to walking together throughout the journey. I’m really glad that I get to look at it every time I walk into the office before work.

I understand there’s a great story behind the coin / currency collection that you keep in your desk.

Yes! My grandfather gave me his coin collection before he passed, and it’s one of those things where I wish I would have asked what made him take it up as a hobby, and how he obtained some of this stuff. I know he never went on the internet (bless his heart), and he never mentioned going to shops or auctions to look for obscure Buffalo nickels from the early 1900s. Based on how comprehensive it is, it’s clear to me that he really loved doing it.

Now, I keep it near my desk to pull out and examine any time I need to lose myself in history, or in thinking about my grandfather. I wonder about all of the hands throughout time that these coins and bills passed through. Conceptually, I hate money and all of the power that billionaires who have a lot of it can wield (often to negative effect), but I really enjoy handling this old currency. It’s lost to time and is no longer accepted as legal tender in society, but it still holds a lot of value to me.

What you have on your desk and in your workspace at home can reveal a lot about you: how you work, what you like to distract yourself with, what kind of toys and other tchotchkes you like to have around you. That is why we have the What’s On Your Desk? series, where we look at how some of our coworkers organize their spaces. It gives us — and you, our readers — a glimpse into the personality of the folks who work here. Today is the final day of Amazon’s first-ever four-day Prime Day, so if it’s your last chance to get these deals.

Out of curiosity, we took a look at some of our past articles to see if any of the devices that our staff use in their day-to-day work have surfaced during Amazon’s Prime Day sale. We managed to find quite a few.

Here they are, along with any comments that the folks who use them had to say.

Kallie Plagge, senior copy editor

I have a Logitech G713 wired mechanical keyboard with GX red linear switches. It came with the cloud wrist rest, which was admittedly the main reason I bought it over other keyboards. (I got a rainy day-themed mouse pad from a small stationery shop called Unicorn Eclipse to complete the look.) I also liked the tenkeyless layout; my previous keyboard had a number pad and two rows of programmable keys, and even though setting up macros was nice, it took up way too much space on my desk. Plus, I only ever used the number pad to input the PC shortcut for em dashes.

Logitech G713 wired mechanical keyboard and wristrest

I was worried it would be too small — it’s specifically marketed as having a “smaller fit,” and my hands are a pretty average size — but I actually love it! It’s comfortable and made me realize the Razer mouse is slightly too big for me.

I’ve used mechanical keyboards off and on since 2016, but most of the ones I tried were gaming keyboards, and those work best on Windows computers. I liked the feel, but I have a Mac and was annoyed at all the workarounds for mapping keys. An old coworker recommended Keychron during the pandemic because their keyboards are Mac-compatible — and I haven’t used another keyboard since.

Kallie Plagge, The Verge’s senior copy editor, has been working in the media for over 10 years now, mainly at gaming websites. She was primarily a video game critic for a lot of that time and was the reviews editor at GameSpot for about three years, before eventually becoming the senior copy editor at Polygon. “I was there for three years before Vox Media sold the brand, and I was fortunate enough to be offered the same role at The Verge,” she explains.

We asked Kallie to tell us about her home office setup.

That looks like a great space. Where in your home is it?

I currently live with my parents, and they were generous enough to give me a separate office space. It’s next to my bedroom, and then my dad’s office is just down the hall. When I lived here during the covid lockdown, I worked from the dining room table, so it’s a big upgrade!

Could you tell us about your L-shaped desk? It looks like you have separate working and gaming spaces.

I was intent on getting an L-shaped desk when I bought this a few years ago from Target, and I can’t go back. At my old desk, I had a KVM switch so I could use just one monitor and keyboard with both my work laptop and my gaming PC, and that worked fine. But once I’d been working from home for a while, I realized I preferred to have “separate” work and gaming spaces, even if it only involved swiveling my chair 90 degrees. That bit of mental separation helped me really feel like I was transitioning out of work mode.

Even with all the space of an L-shaped desk, I still wanted a big drawer unit for all my spare cables and stationery. This one is the Ikea Alex drawer unit on casters, and it doubles as even more surface real estate for things like my PC tower and personal laptop. I just really need to be able to spread out to focus.

Tell us about your chair.

My dad actually bought this chair for me during lockdown. Because I’d been working in the dining room, I was using a dining room chair, and he could tell it wasn’t very comfortable. This is a Respawn gaming chair, and I added foam pads from Amazon to the armrests for extra comfort.

Here’s the long one: tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

Hoo boy. On the work side, I have a Keychron K2 wireless mechanical keyboard with red switches. I chose it mainly because it has a Mac mode with Mac-compatible keycaps, which means I can easily use shortcuts that require the Command key. My mouse is just one I had on hand — a Razer Mamba wireless gaming mouse, though I use it wired because I prefer wired mice. Please ignore my dirty mouse pad.

On the gaming side, I have a Logitech G713 wired mechanical keyboard with GX red linear switches.

Logitech G713 keyboard

Wired mechanical keyboard with RBG lighting, tactile switches, and palm rest.

I also got the matching Logitech G705 wireless gaming mouse, which, again, I use wired. I was worried it would be too small — it’s specifically marketed as having a “smaller fit,” and my hands are a pretty average size — but I actually love it! It’s comfortable and made me realize the Razer mouse is slightly too big for me.

The Dell monitor is a hand-me-down, and I’m not really particular about monitors. I only wish it had a second HDMI port, because right now, I just manually switch the HDMI cable from my Xbox Series X to my gaming PC and back, depending on what I’m playing. It’s not a huge deal, but an extra port would make it easier to set up my Nintendo Switch 2 dock at my desk.

Because I have two stations at this desk, I also have two pairs of headphones. For everyday use, I have the Bose QuietComfort 35 II noise-canceling headphones that I wear constantly. (I don’t even listen to anything. I just really like dampening outside noise!) And for gaming, I have a SteelSeries Arctis 7X wireless headset that’s compatible with both PC and Xbox. It also has a dial on the right ear cup that lets me fine-tune the balance between game and chat audio, which is necessary for me when I’m playing multiplayer games with friends.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones

Where to Buy:

<strike>$359</strike> $199 at Amazon

<strike>$359</strike> $199 at Best Buy

<strike>$359.99</strike> $199.99 at Target

My gaming PC is a whole other thing, and I don’t have to get into the specs, which are pretty midrange. But since you can see the chassis: it’s a Cooler Master MasterBox NR200 Mini-ITX case. It was a gift, and I love its form factor.

That’s an adorable Pikachu — love the suit!

Thank you! I have a massive collection of Pokémon merch, including a lot of Pikachus in different outfits and with different themes, and the rest of them live in my bedroom. But I like having businessman Pikachu on my desk! I imported him from Japan in early 2015; his official name in the US is Intern Pikachu, but I think that’s underselling his qualifications.

And a Pokémon tabletop fan, as well!

I am obsessed with this Poliwhirl fan. I also imported this from Japan — it was part of a recent onsen-themed collection, and a lot of these collections never come to the US for a variety of reasons, so I pulled the trigger right away. It has three speed settings, there are felt pads on the feet so it doesn’t slip or wobble while it’s on, and you can angle it upward. I love getting useful items that also have a clever and cute design, and this is the epitome of that.

You have a nice, comfortable-looking couch.

I love this couch! It’s from Article. It’s comfortable, but it’s not so squishy that you sink into it, and that was the goal.

Is that a desk bike? Do you use it much?

It is! It’s a Flexispot V9 Pro desk bike. I’m using it more now that it’s getting hotter outside, since taking a walk is less appealing in 100-degree heat. I do find that I have a hard time focusing on editorial work while riding the bike, so it’s really only good for when I’m in a meeting with my camera off. But I do like it — I have very bad ankles, and I can’t really run, so it’s a nice way to get some more intense cardio.

Is there anything we didn’t cover that you’d like to add?

Business Pikachu says thank you for reading.

Allison Johnson is the smartphone reviewer for The Verge, along with, as she says, “a bit of telecom on the side, which means I am a professional phone user.” She came to The Verge from DPReview, where she covered digital cameras and smartphone cameras.

That looks like a cozy space. Where in your home is it?

It’s in our bedroom. When my husband and I moved into our house, we were two people who both worked outside of the home. Now, we’re two people who both work from home full time plus a three-year-old, so cozy is an understatement! I actually move around the house a lot with my laptop throughout the day, so the desk is more of a home base.

Could you tell us a bit about the desk itself?

It’s a mini desk from West Elm. It was a lockdown purchase when everyone was buying desks and stuff, so things were a little chaotic. The first time it “arrived,” I opened the box, and there was a lampshade inside. The actual desk came a few months later.

And your chair (including the footrest)?

The chair is from Ikea, and it’s honestly not great, but the pillow helps. The footrest is by a company called Cushion Lab, and it’s so comfy. It’s kind of like a firm memory foam, and I knead my feet into it like a cat making biscuits.

I love how neatly you’ve got your cords arranged.

It wasn’t always this way! I need to have a few different kinds of chargers at the ready, since I switch smartwatches whenever I switch between Android and iOS, plus I’m never giving up my Lightning-charged iPhone 13 Mini. I used to fish the cables off the floor when I needed them but I finally got these stick-on cord holders, and I’ve been a changed woman ever since.

Tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

I use my company-issued M1 MacBook Air, and the battery life is still so good that I never bring a charger if I’m going to work from somewhere else during the day. At my desk, I use this Logitech Pebble 2 keyboard and mouse that I bought purely based on looks but they’re quite nice. I use this Rain Design laptop stand, which is very sturdy. I bought the fixed version rather than the adjustable and was a little worried I wouldn’t like it, but it’s been great. I also have the infamous Brother laser printer and haven’t had to buy new toner for it in the five years I’ve been using it to print shipping labels. It rules.

I see you’ve got separate storage for your phone review units.

Again, it wasn’t always this way. Unless a company wants their review device back right away, I like to keep them for about a year after the review to revisit them and use them for comparisons. But everything eventually goes back to the manufacturer, unless they specifically don’t want it — in which case I bring it to a center that will either refurbish and reuse them or recycle them. I was keeping them in their boxes until I saw some other phone reviewers had them organized in neat little stands, so I got one, and I’m not sure how I lived without it before.

That’s a lovely lamp!

It gives off this nice orange glow that is essential in the winter when it starts getting dark at 3:30PM. Also, I like that I can use it to let the neighborhood know if the British are coming by land or by sea.

Like many of our colleagues, you also use a paper notebook. Do you have a preference for a certain type?

What exactly is a producer? Well, according to Nick Statt, who is senior producer on The Verge’s Decoder podcast with Nilay Patel, “the word ‘producer’ means a lot of things in a lot of different contexts.” In his case — here at The Verge and in the world of audio — it means he and coproducer Kate Cox run the show’s editorial operations and logistics. “That includes doing the majority of the scheduling and planning, selecting and booking guests, and writing scripts and packaging episodes from the start of a pitch to when it goes out to your podcast player of choice alongside The Verge’s website.”

Prior to working at The Verge, Nick was a writer and reporter for 10 years, covering a variety of different beats — mostly gaming, social media companies, and San Francisco-based startups. But after spending most of the 2010s in California, he says, “I moved back to my hometown of Rochester in western New York at the start of covid, and I’ve been remote ever since. That has meant putting a lot more time and effort into my home setup to make it a space I want to spend time in for the majority of my days.”

We asked Nick more about his setup.

That looks like a really comfortable space. Where in your house is it?

This is our second bedroom in a three-story townhome we rent here in Rochester. My fiancee is a therapist, and she thankfully has a much cozier space she rents nearby for seeing clients, which means I was able to turn this into an office and gaming room. It gets great sunlight in the morning, which my cat (and my plants) love. We live in a pretty sprawling apartment and townhouse complex right near one of Rochester’s biggest parks and away from a lot of busier areas. So it tends to be quiet and peaceful, which is also good for long work sessions and for recording audio.

Could you tell us about the desk itself?

The desk I have is a bamboo Jarvis Fully, which seemed like the best yet most affordable standing desk I could get my hands on in 2020, when everyone went remote. It’s not as large as I’d like; I might upgrade at some point in the future for some more surface area. But I’ve disassembled and reassembled it about five times now, and it’s worked flawlessly for years, so I’m quite happy with it.

It looks like Herman Miller acquired Fully at some point, and a lot of people don’t seem quite as happy with the product as they used to. It also now costs quite a bit more than what I paid for it five years ago. So if I do ever upgrade to a larger standing desk, I’ll have to shop around for some other alternatives.

And your chair?

The chair is a custom Herman Miller Embody, which I ordered at a really generous discount in 2021 from what’s known as a design-and-build company in New York City, thanks to a helpful tip from a friend. These companies effectively act like wholesale retailers of office furniture, and if you email them directly, they’ll sometimes just sell you a one-off item for cheaper than MSRP.

I’m assuming at the height of covid, authorized Herman Miller dealers — architectural and interior design firms and so on — were trying to offload a lot of unused inventory. I was thankfully able to still get the “canyon” color scheme on it, which can be a little bit harder to find (and pricier) if you buy from a consumer retailer or authorized reseller.

I’m extremely happy with it, and I don’t expect to ever have to buy another type of chair. It’s done wonders for some very persistent back pain of mine, and I highly recommend it if you sit too much for a living. I did order a headrest separately as the Embody doesn’t come with one. It’s from the company Atlas Headrest, and that’s been well worth it for longer work sessions.

Tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

My favorite part of the setup is, of course, the keyboard. It’s a Rama Works M60-A in a Lunar New Year Edition color scheme. I had already begun dabbling in the niche mechanical keyboard community around 2019 for a related Verge project. When the pandemic hit, I needed a few extra indoor hobbies to go deeper on, and this one was right there waiting for me. I spent a lot of time researching what I wanted, and I found that Rama Works really nailed the combination of high build quality and craftsmanship while also having versatility, so I could use it for office work and gaming — though it did take getting used to the 60 percent setup, as you’re missing quite a few keys.

It cost more than I’d like to admit and took forever to arrive, but I’ve used it daily for four years now and still really enjoy it. I’ve done a few customizations, mostly installing NovelKeys Cream switches and quieter stabilizers, and I’ve swapped out the keycaps quite a few times before landing on my most recent ones. I also paired it with a matching red USB-C cable from the peripheral company Glorious.

A lot of my other gear is fairly standard. I use a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro as my primary work computer, and I pair it with a Logitech M720 wireless mouse. I have a Shure MV7 microphone, Logitech Brio webcam, and Sony MDR-7506 monitor headphones for any audio and recording work, as we mostly record remotely using the platform Riverside, and those really cover most of the bases. I have a TP-Link Deco mesh node that I keep on the desk, which lets me hard wire in my gaming desktop and also gives me pretty stellar wireless in the upstairs of my apartment. (Our townhome has fiber internet, which is a godsend.) I also use an Anker USB-C docking station, which lets me keep a half dozen accessories plugged in at the same time, and a Belkin 3-in-1 wireless charger for my Apple devices.

Logitech M720 Triathlon

A comfortable, fast-scrolling wireless mouse with a long (24-month) battery life.

Where to Buy:

$45.1 at Amazon

As for the gaming station, my PC is an older Maingear Vybe, a prebuilt I purchased in 2021 with an Nvidia 3070 Ti and AMD Ryzen 7 5800X. I was really impressed with Maingear’s build quality and customer service, and I don’t do too much intensive PC gaming outside of older multiplayer shooters (like Destiny 2 and now Marvel Rivals), indie games, and the occasional new Game Pass release. So it’s held up well these past few years.

I use a Glorious Model O wireless mouse with it alongside the Halo Infinite-themed Xbox Elite 2 controller and a 27-inch LG QHD UltraGear monitor. I also have a HyperX Cloud wireless headset that I use exclusively for gaming. The only real hitch in the whole setup is having to manually swap the keyboard back and forth when I want to switch stations, though I’m sure there is likely an easier way to handle that.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is easily one of our favorite controllers at The Verge. It’s an improvement on the already excellent Elite controller, with deep customization, optional rear paddle buttons, a swappable D-pad, and analog sticks that allow you to tailor its layout to suit your play style.

Where to Buy:

<strike>$199.99</strike> $157.95 at Microsoft

<strike>$199.99</strike> $134.99 at Walmart

<strike>$199.99</strike> $170.99 at Best Buy

That’s a great deskpad.

Giant mousepads, or deskpads, as the keyboard hobbyists call them, are definitely a fun way to add a lot more flair to a workstation, and I’ve collected a handful of them since getting deeper into the keyboard community.

This particular one is a Takashi Murakami collaboration with the esports organization Faze Clan. I am not really a Faze fan by any means, but I am a huge Murakami fan. So I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add some of his art to my desk setup. This deskpad is a modified print of Murakami’s famous “Flowers.” If you’re looking for a deskpad of your own, good places to start are NovelKeys or Omnitype.

Between that, and the chair, and the computer, and the keyboard, that’s a lot of red. (Except, of course, for the rubber ducky…)

I definitely didn’t set out to have a red color scheme going on, but it did happen slowly after I got my hands on my Rama Works keyboard and just really got into the aesthetics of my setup. I found the red PC case from a secondhand seller online, and Maingear was nice enough to let me ship it in to use in my PC build. And of course, the chair and other accessories felt like they would be a nice and natural fit. It also helps that a lot of gaming-centric gear seems to utilize the color red.

The rubber duck is a toy version of the Ōtori-Sama bathhouse spirits from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away I got as a Christmas gift last year. A good addition to any desk, in my opinion.

So — you play the guitar?

I used to play a lot more guitar and do more bedroom music production, but it’s been a little hard to keep up with these past several years. I still mess around with the Fender Jaguar I have from time to time, but it was a whole lot easier during the pandemic, which is when I bought the Pioneer DJ controller and began to teach myself some production software. Now that I work in audio professionally, I’m considering getting back into it to learn more professional-grade editing apps like Audition and Pro Tools and to practice more recording techniques.

Those are very different pieces of art you have over your desk.

My fiancee and I have collected a great deal of art over the years. I usually like to keep a lot of the sci-fi, gaming, and pop culture art in my office, including one of my favorites: Olly Moss’ Breaking Bad giclee print set, which you can see on the right side of the back wall. I love Olly Moss’ artwork, and I’ve collected quite a few of his pop culture doodle sets like this one. But the Breaking Bad one remains my favorite of the bunch.

I also have some art I’ve collected from some of my favorite artists featured in the mobile game Marvel Snap, including a Dan Hipp print featuring Doctor Doom and other villains. I have an Elden Ring print that I love framed on the right there, and then, of course, some Verge prints I’ve collected from our very talented photography and art teams over the many years I’ve worked here.

And, of course, you must introduce us to your cat.

My cat’s name is General Bean Sprout, which is not a name we chose but is indeed a name we absolutely have grown to appreciate. We call him Sprout for short. We adopted him in the fall of 2023 from an animal shelter here in the Rochester area known as Lollypop Farm, which gave him that name, as little information about his prior living situation was available. He was a terribly scared and anxious cat when we adopted him. Over the course of many months, he’s gone from hiding from the very sight of us in the room to now cuddling with us virtually any chance he can get.

He loves to say hello to me every morning by jumping up on the desk and rubbing his face into mine, and he spends most of his time during the day snoozing in his cat tree facing the window. Thankfully, he does not like to mess with any of the gear on my desk, but he’s quite fond of battling loose hair ties and yarn balls in the middle of the night.

Many of us work from home, and so one of the most important places in those homes is our workspaces — in other words, our desks.

Everyone’s workspace is different. What kind of desk — and desk chair — do you use? Is your workspace neat and organized or filled with tchotchkes and toys? Do you have an old-fashioned wooden desk or a mechanized standing desk? Are you sitting on a stool or the latest Herman Miller desk chair? Is your workspace filled with this year’s high-end tech for working and gaming, or are you happy with a five-year-old laptop and a pair of headphones?

In our “What’s on your desk?” series, we look into how people organize and use their workspace so that you can find out all of the various ways we see our spaces and ourselves.

Kylie Robison is The Verge’s senior reporter covering artificial intelligence. Previously, she worked at Fortune, where she covered Twitter; before that, she covered software developer culture (“a beat,” she says, “I made up and loved”) for Business Insider. “I’ve always been obsessed with technology in an extremely online way,” she adds, “and The Verge is filled with people who are on the same wavelength.”

We asked Kylie to tell us a bit about her home office setup.

It looks like your office space is right outside the kitchen.

It is! I live in a studio, but when I tell people that, they say it’s a bit too big to be called that, so my friends and I joke that it’s a studio deluxe. My living room is also my bedroom, I have a dining nook that I use for my office, and my kitchen is right behind me.

Could you tell us a bit about the desk itself?

It’s a Mittzon desk from Ikea. I wanted something adjustable in a light oak color, and it has great cable management stuff in the back.

And your chair?

It’s a beat-to-death standard Amazon desk chair. I should probably upgrade soon…

Tell us about the various tech devices you’re using.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro M4 that I adore. I have a Dell Ultra HD 4K Monitor (that’s no longer available) and an Asus ProArt monitor. I have no idea how long I’ve had either or where I even got them from. I have a pair of first-gen Apple AirPod Max headphones. I have two pairs of Ray-Ban Metas. (One is a limited-edition pair.) Last but not least, a Vergecast-mandated Audio-Technica microphone (they told me my Blue Yeti sucked).

You’ve got an enormous amount of interesting stuff there. For example, the leafy pad you have under your keyboard is lovely.

Thank you! I thought the aesthetic was nice, I actually have another in a different color depending on my mood. It’s a nice addition to add some color.

Who is the smiling pink purse?

That’s Kirby! A Nintendo character that holds all my Micron pens.

Tell us about that glass achievement award just under the monitor.

I got that in college. I was raised by my mom, who didn’t go to college, which qualified me as a first-generation student. I got an achievement award thanks to my work for my student publication, The State Hornet, where I wrote about technology in covid times. I think it helped that I had an okay GPA, too.

Are those family photos on the wall?

Yes! The old-school portrait is my grandma, aka the love of my life. There’s also my mom’s high-school portrait, where she wears a T-shirt that says “girls kick ass!” — probably my favorite photo up there. There’s my grandpa holding me as a baby, photos of my friends, my preschool class, my Burning Man ID, and a wood-burned Dril tweet.

And that large CD-R?

I saw it online, and it was the best impulse purchase of my life. So cool.

I had to look up those Sonny Angel figures. Is there a story behind them?

Sometimes you need some little friends to get you through your days. I just think they’re cute! They’re also really popular with young women — I live by Japantown in San Francisco, so they’re easy for me to buy.

I’m fascinated by all the interesting stuff you have on the shelves. Not to mention the neon face….

That face is Majora’s Mask from The Legend of Zelda! There’s a lot of Zelda stuff throughout my house, Breath of the Wild might be my favorite video game ever. My shelves also have a 3D-printed Moo Deng, the biting baby hippo; a few signed books from the industry; a Lego Nezuko from Demon Slayer; my college degree; a pothos plant; an AI toy (that has yet to be mass released); the dried flowers from a friend’s celebration of life; an ice cream scoop that’s engraved “Slack scoop” to commemorate all my scoopin’— there’s a lot to love up there.

And last but not least, please introduce us to your cat!

That’s Fang! My grandpa likes to call him Fangster. Fun fact: I named him Fang on a whim, and four years after I got him, the vet said he was having teeth problems that would require the removal of quite a few. In the end, the only teeth he got to keep were his fangs. Weird, huh?

Anything else we didn’t cover that you’d like to add?

Whoever sees this — don’t yell at me about my cord setup. I gave up so quickly. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

Kristen Radtke is The Verge’s creative director; she works with the art team to create the visuals for stories and custom features. “Before this,” she explains, “I was art director for the small arts and culture magazine The Believer, and in a previous life, I worked in independent book publishing.”

We asked her to show us her home office, and she graciously obliged.

That looks like a really well organized space — a little narrow, but the space is used really well.

The room is quite narrow — a little under seven feet — so furnishing it in a functional way was a fun challenge. I really like working within the limitations of a small space, figuring out how maximalist I can go without overwhelming a room.

Is that your backyard we see through the door?

It is! I love being able to pop outside for quick breaks from work, and having the door open on temperate days is a serious mood booster.

Could you tell us a bit about the desk itself?

I like having an L-shaped desk so that I can pivot back and forth between two work surfaces. This desk was made for me by my dad and husband out of plywood while my parents were visiting, right after our baby was born last year. Because the space is so small, I really wanted to use every inch I could, so we took meticulous measurements and built it in place exactly to size. I like that the desk also serves as a kind of room divider, creating a distinction between work and lounge space.

And your chair?

This chair is supposed to help with your posture; you sort of kneel on it while sitting back. I found it on AptDeco and have no idea what it’s called. I use it properly about half the time, but sometimes I catch myself sitting cross-legged or with my feet up on it. [Editor’s note: I believe it’s called a kneeling chair; I had one several years ago, and yes, I ended up using it as a seat with a footrest.] I thought I’d miss being able to lean back, but I really don’t, and I can always move over to the couch if I want to lounge for a bit.

Tell us about the various tech devices you’re using. (And please be specific about the model, etc.)

I have a MacBook Pro for work, but I hate it and never use it. It gets so hot, the fan is so loud, and the battery life is atrocious. I’m an evangelist for the MacBook Air, which I always thought wouldn’t be powerful enough for me as a designer, but with the 16GB model from 2021, I can use the whole Adobe Suite at once without any stalling. I’ve never been a person who wants multiple monitors; once I got used to my 13-inch screen, I was fine with it, and I hate the visual clutter of a bunch of extra monitors.

For drawing, I use a Wacom Cintiq 22 drawing tablet with a 21.5-inch screen. Sometimes the connection is a little glitchy and I get some screen static, but I haven’t found anything better. When I’m traveling or not in my home office, I draw on an iPad Pro.

Wacom Cintiq 22

I love the bookcase in the closet!

Thank you! Because the room is so small, I couldn’t fit a couch and desk in there and still have a closet door that opened, so I just took it off. Most of my books aren’t stored in my office simply due to lack of space — we’re always hauling books from one room to the other and offloading copies onto friends and into Little Free Libraries — so I try to keep my office just for books I want to return or refer to. This closet is reserved for graphic novels.

And you also have shelves for books above your desk. And I noticed that some of those books have your name on them.

I’m terrible at keeping my books organized — I used to alphabetize but gave up after my last move. It’s so tedious! After a while, I have a rough visual memory of where things are. The books above my desk are mostly those I’m using for research for a current project. I also have a (nearly) complete set of The Believer back issues, though my husband and I have been toying with the idea of combining our magazine archive into one periodical shelf in the living room.

And yes! I write and draw books in my life outside of The Verge. My last one was called Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness, and I’m currently a couple of years overdue on a book about gossip, secrets, and talk (apologies to my editor!).

Tell us about the collection of art you have on the wall opposite your desk.

Most of the art I have hanging in my office is somewhat sentimental: the first paragraph I ever typeset and letterpressed in graduate school; a funny quote from a review of my last book needlepointed by my friend; broadsides from some of my favorite cartoonists. I never get things professionally framed — it’s just so expensive! I love Framed and Matted and Frame It Easy; there’s a much lower bar for entry than going to a frame shop, and it gives me room to play around with color and chunky mats.

That’s a really comfortable-looking couch!

It’s surprisingly comfortable! It was a brandless cheapy that I got for under $400, also on AptDeco. I like that the chaise lifts up to store a blanket and extra pillow. It folds down into a (rather uncomfortable) full-size bed, and I add a memory foam topper to make it tolerable when I need an extra sleeping space for guests.

Anything else we didn’t cover that you’d like to add?

I wanted my office to be a really dreamy space because I spend so much time there, both for The Verge and because of my creative work outside of it. I picked colors that feel very private that I wouldn’t use in shared spaces: a powder pink by Benjamin Moore called “Little Piggy,” and I wallpapered the outlets with prints from Spoonflower, a textile company that I love.

I also put some of my favorite heirlooms in the room, and the most prized is the lamp next to my couch. It was my grandmother’s, from the house I grew up visiting before she moved into assisted living. She had it custom-made to match her palm tree-themed living room in northern Wisconsin, and there is a lot to unpack here: a tropical island scene is designed within the lampshade, which is itself constructed in the shape of a tree, though it’s very notably not a palm tree. It makes no sense, and it’s perfect.
