Ice Cream Sandwich: the next version of Android (update: unveiled!)

Update: Confirmed! “Android Ice Cream Sandwich unveiled, ‘one OS that works everywhere’”

We know, it sounds like a mouthful, but it certainly looks like Google has settled on naming its next version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While there has been debate over whether the next major update would be called Ice Cream or Ice Cream Sandwich, Google developer Romain Guy used the latter in response to a code issue, so it appears the debate is pretty much over. In addition to that bit of evidence, we have heard a few of our very own sources refer to the next version as Ice Cream Sandwich. We also have heard those very same sources explain that this version of Android will fix some of the issues we have seen in Honeycomb and that it will, like Eric Schmidt implied at MWC, bring some Gingerbread and Honeycomb features together -- sort of like, you know, in a sandwich. There are still a bunch of questions left, including whether it will be called Android 3.1, but something tells us that Google will be pulling a lot of answers out of the freezer next week at Google I/O.
