The next big version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, should land in the October or November timeframe. That is, it will if Google’s Eric Schmidt’s recent comment during an interview with SalesForce.com CEO Marc Benioff is accurate:
Eric Schmidt: Ice Cream Sandwich to be released in October / November
We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone’s really excited about.
It’s worth noting that Andy Rubin will be appearing at the AsiaD conference, which runs from October 19th to the 21st. That seems like a perfectly good time to unveil ICS, and we’ll be there live if it happens.
If you aren’t familiar, Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to finally unify the UI between Android phones and tablets, though it’s not clear how the only purported leaked screenshots we’ve seen thus far make that happen. The first device we expect it on is still presumably the Nexus Prime / Droid Prime.
Check out Schmidt’s comments at the 30:25 minute mark in the video after the break.
