A decade from now, Samsung believes you’ll be able to look out the window to see not only the weather right now, but the weather tomorrow, your emails, and your Twitter feed. This science fiction staple could become reality, the company says, because its engineers have figured out how to grow LEDs on a glass surface. Using titanium, silica, and gallium nitride, the resulting LEDs can be made up to 400 times larger than current LEDs, though they don’t perform quite as well as those grown on silicon or sapphire. If the process can be streamlined and simplified, they could also be much less expensive to produce. Samsung’s been developing ever-more transparent displays for a while now, and is even mass-producing see-through LCDs, but replacing your window with a giant LED panel is a decidedly more ambitious goal.
