LG is planning on launching its first Google TV-powered panel at CES in January, according to “two people with knowledge of the project” who have spoken to Bloomberg. LG is the second largest manufacturer of TVs in the world (after Samsung), and would be the third manufacturer to adopt Google’s platform. Admittedly, that group isn’t the sunniest place to be right now — earlier this week, Logitech’s CEO said that Google TV had cost his firm dearly, and that the company had “no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue.” Sony was also forced to slash the prices of its Google-powered TVs and Blu-Ray players back in August following poor sales.

With falling profit margins and prices in the TV industry, LG seems to be looking to Google TV as a potential differentiator. Although earlier adopters of Google’s platform might have struggled, it’s now far more mature, with access to the Android Market coming in the last couple of weeks making it a more attractive option for consumers. If the rumors prove to be true, this is also a huge boon for Google, as without new major partners, the future for their home entertainment OS looks fairly bleak.
