The Xoom 2 and its little brother, the Xoom 2 Media Edition, may be headed to Verizon under the Droid Xyboard 10.1 and 8.2 monickers, according to PocketNow. We’ve already seen via a leaked Verizon stock system grab that the sequels to the original Honeycomb tablet are on their way to the carrier, but the name change comes as more of a surprise. The tablets will be the first to be marketed under the Droid brand, but the Xyboard name is a little more unexpected. Verizon trademarked Xyboard just over a month ago with the USPTO, but with the relative success and familiarity the Xoom brand now holds, it seems like an odd choice to move to a totally new — and potentially divisive — name.

As a reminder, the pair of tablets are expected to launch anytime now in the UK and Ireland under the Xoom brand, running Android 3.2 on 1.2GHz dual-core processors, with 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. The main difference between the two models is screen size, with the Xoom 2 clocking in at 10.1 inches as compared to the Media Edition’s 8.2-inch display — both are IPS with 1280x800 screen resolutions. No release date has been announced for Verizon yet, but expect it soon.
