Some musicians may be working towards the ugliest piece of music without knowing it, but Scott Rickard set out with aural torture in mind from the get go — in the TED video below he discusses the science behind creating music without any pattern (skip to 7:47 if you just want to hear the sounds). He says the world’s ugliest music is totally absent of repetition which is “something only a mathematician could write.” We’re not sold on the idea that the enjoyment of an art such as music can be reduced scientifically, but the composition sure does live up its promise.
