Pogoplug just announced the new $99 Series 4 miniature server, which lets you put nearly any hard drive or storage device on the web. It’s extremely similar to the current Pogoplug Mobile, but adds far more ports: two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an SD card slot, a 2.5-inch SATA connector that can accept Seagate’s GoFlex drives, and an Ethernet port. The setup is fairly simple: after you connect the Pogoplug to your router via Ethernet and add some storage to the device, you’re able to access files from a web browser or apps for your Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, and stream media to your Xbox 360 or PS3. Pogoplug calls all this the “personal cloud,” and it integrates with the 5GB of free storage the company offers to everyone — you can also buy more storage on Pogoplug’s servers or install the $29 desktop software that turns your PC or Mac into a Pogoplug server.

We played around with the Series 4 a bit in our office today and found that it performs quite well — looking at photos or streaming videos from the web, mobile, and desktop apps was fast and simple. Setup went well too, although the automatic connection failed and we were forced to type in our product’s serial number. We’ll have a full review for you soon, but if you can’t wait you can order the Series 4 (or just grab 5GB of free cloud storage) from Pogoplug’s website now.
