We’re not too sure what to make of this, but Google chairman Eric Schmidt told Italian publication Corriere Della Sera that his company will market a competitive tablet within the next six months. The quote comes right at the top of a longer interview in which Schmidt calls Steve Jobs the Michelangelo of our time and reflects on his time in Montessori preschool in Bologna, so it’s possible that Schmidt was just optimistically riffing, as he’s been wont to do lately — two weeks ago he was promising that the majority of new TVs would have Google TV in them by summer 2012. Then again, Google can’t be blind to the poor sales of Android tablets thus far, and we’d imagine the company is committed to improving that situation as soon as possible — Google politely declined to comment on Schmidt’s remarks when we reached out, but we’ll see what happens in the months ahead.
