Wow. We’ve seen some elaborate Christmas trees this year — some made entirely from books or from phones — but what we love about this Portal homage is its outside-the-box thinking. The top third of an artificial tree was hung to the ceiling, while the bottom two-thirds are stuck upside down into the floor. Blue and red lights rope lights were used (because orange lights couldn’t be found) for the portal outline; black construction paper and garland helped to hide any gaps and sell the illusion. Scotch tape is the surprisingly effective adhesive of choice.
