Following a recent rumor that we broke right here on The Verge, AT&T is nudging all three of its smartphone data plans starting this Sunday, January 22nd. Currently you can get 200MB for $15, 2GB for $25, or 4GB with tethering for $45; all three plans are seeing $5 price increases and will be boosted to 300MB, 3GB, and 5GB, respectively. In other words, you’re paying more, but it’s a lower cost per byte across the board — and considering that company exec John Stankey claimed a 40 percent year-over-year increase in data growth among its customers at a recent financial conference, larger buckets are probably called for. Tablet customers, meanwhile, will have access to the latter two plans: 3GB for $30 and 5GB for $50. The $14.99 / 250MB tablet plan will also continue to be available.

What does this mean for current customers? There’s no change, even if you upgrade your phone or sign a new contract — if you’re on a (throttled) unlimited plan, you can stay on it, and the same goes for those on the 200MB, 2GB, and 4GB packages — but you can voluntarily switch over to the new plans if you like starting this Sunday.
