Virgin Mobile USA, Sprint’s value-brand subsidiary, is going through with a plan to enact data throttling beginning on March 23rd. Users on “Beyond Talk Plans” who download more than 2.5GB of data during their billing cycle will see their download speeds drop to a glacial 256Kpbs until their plan refreshes. As it’s a month-to-month, no-contract plan, users can re-up immediately once the throttling goes into effect if they’d like to bring their speeds back up to normal.

Virgin had originally intended to implement the throttling last year, but delayed the decision until now. When originally planning the throttling back in July of last year, Virgin Mobile VP David Trimble said it was necessary in order to stay competitive. Virgin’s parent company, Sprint, has remained adamant that it does not (and will not) throttle unlimited data customers on postpaid plans.
