Now here’s a hardware announcement we didn’t expect to see this year: a new portable Neo Geo console. SNK seems to have licensed a handheld decked out in Neo Geo livery, with 20 classic arcade games from Metal Slug to King of Fighters ‘94 preloaded onto 2GB of internal memory. The system also has a 4.3-inch screen, an SD card slot of undisclosed purpose, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons, and (most importantly) appears to keep the digital stick from the Neo Geo home console’s pad. Of course, it’s not the first time you’ve been able to play these games on the go — a lot of them are available on SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 for PSP, and also as downloads from the PlayStation Store — but the device’s retro appeal is undeniable. No word on pricing or availability as of yet, though. The reveal comes from Japanese game blog Famicom Plaza and is yet to be confirmed by SNK itself, so it’s probable that, if real, the device has leaked ahead of its time.
