The Spark is a modestly-specced enthusiast tablet that’s just been announced, and it’s aimed at those who want to run applications on Linux-based open hardware. The creators say it’s the first tablet to come with Plasma Active pre-installed — an open-source UI intended for use in a variety of touchscreen devices. The €200 (about $264) Spark houses a 1GHz AMLogic ARM processor, a Mali-400 GPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, an SD card slot, Wi-Fi, and a 7-inch capacitive multi-touch screen.

The tablet’s creator, Aaron Seigo, says that “this is more than just another piece of hardware on the market... this is a unique opportunity for free software,” and that proceeds from sales will go towards future development of the platform. Seigo says that details on ordering and availability will be released on Tuesday.
