Nintendo and NTT Docomo are working on a speech-to-text system for the Nintendo DSi, intended to assist hearing-impaired children with school instruction, NHK reports. As teachers speak, the system converts their words into text, which is then displayed on the DSi's screen on a virtual blackboard. The system is also said to feature a game that allows students to interact with the text, and the text is also stored in the cloud to allow students to access it at a later time. NTT began trials on the technology today in some Japanese schools, but the company aims to use the technology for general speech recognition purposes outside of the classroom as well.
