Yesterday, Apple released a carrier update for the Verizon iPhone 5 to fix an issue with the device using cellular data, even when connected to Wi-Fi. Generally, when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it is assumed that your data plan is not being used, but under certain conditions, the newest iPhone on Verizon would default to eating through cellular data anyway. This problem has had the greatest impact on those with limited data plans. We’ve reached out to Verizon Wireless to see if the carrier has plans to reimburse customers for any data overages caused by the bug. The update is available now, and instructions on installing it can be found at Apple Support.

Update: Verizon Wireless spokesperson Torod Neptune told us that “Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.”
