Sony Mobile has announced that Miracast will now be available on the Xperia T and Xperia TX as a firmware update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich rolls out this week. The handsets join Samsung’s Galaxy S III and LG’s Optimus G and Nexus 4 as Miracast-ready smartphones, allowing them to stream video and audio to televisions, not unlike DLNA or Apple’s AirPlay. At this point, TVs that make use of the Wi-Fi Alliance’s streaming protocol are limited to existing WiDi-enabled displays like LG’s Cinema 3D Smart TVs, but Samsung, LG, and Sony are all preparing to release Miracast-certified products in the near future.

Both Sony handsets will also receive an extended standy mode and new Sony Media apps as part of the update, with the Xperia T getting HD Voice, improving overall sound quality for those who still make phone calls.
