According to several reports today, including an update from worldwide internet monitoring service Renesys, Syria’s connection to the internet has mostly been restored. On Friday, Syria was abruptly cut off from the global internet, with both sides in the country’s ongoing civil war accusing the other of sabotage. Syrian officials initially blamed rebels (“terrorists”) for the attacks, but activists claimed that the government is responsible. It’s still not clear what happened, but a physical attack on the network seems unlikely: analysis from CloudFlare suggests that saboteurs would have needed to simultaneously cut four separate physical cables in different locations to achieve the type of blackout that occurred.
