Browse through your social network feeds and you’ll quickly stumble across a friend who’s taken a picture of themselves with a smartphone. South African newspaper Cape Times has created some amusing riffs off the practise, modifying iconic photos throughout history as if they were taken in the same manner. The modified pictures include notable figures such as Winston Churchill and Desmond Tutu, although by far the best example is the famous kiss shared between the sailor and the woman in Times Square on V-J Day. The photos are primarily part of the newspaper’s latest advertising campaign about how “you can’t get any closer to the news,” but they also serve as a fun poke at the “selfies” that run rampant on Facebook and Instagram.
