With dual and quad-core processors now finding their way into bleeding-edge smartphones, last year’s top tech is trickling down to entry-level specs: MediaTek seeks to fill in that market with its new Android 4.0-based MT6575 smartphone platform. The MT6575 is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) with a single-core, 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, a graphics engine, and 3G / HSPA radios. MediaTek says that the new platform supports dual-SIMs, qHD displays, and 720p video playback (by comparison, some of highest-specced Android handsets currently have 1280 x 720 pixel displays and can shoot 1080p video). The company aims to have the chips in sub-$200 smartphones, and says that the first models based on the MT6575 will debut in the first quarter of 2012.
