UK telecommunications service provider BT recently completed successful trials of its new Fiber to the Premise “on demand” service in St. Agnes, Cornwall — which promises to offer download speeds of up to 300Mbps. The service is aimed at customers that are in areas already covered by the company’s Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) service. With FTTC, fiber optic cable is run from telephone exchanges to the cabinets present on the street. Copper phone lines take over from there, resulting in download speeds of up 40Mbps. Under FTTP on demand, the company installs a personal fiber connection from the cabinet straight to the home or business itself.

The company will also be bumping speeds for current FTTC customers, increasing potential speeds to as high as 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up. BT will be conducting further tests of the high-speed Fiber to the Premises service over the summer, and hopes to bring the service live in spring of next year.
