Olympus announced two compact cameras today, not that either should take any attention from the OM-D E-M5. The TG-820 iHS is a rugged compact with a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a 28-140mm equivalent 5x optical zoom lens. The real standout feature is its 3-inch, 1,030,000-dot LCD, an anti-reflective, scratch-proof display that’s as sharp as any camera we can recall. The camera is waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters), shockproof to 6.6 feet (2 meters), freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius) and crushproof to a weight of 220 pounds (100 kilograms). It’s out in March, and will sell for $299.99.

Olympus also announced the SZ-31MR iHS compact superzoom, which has a 24x (25-600mm equivalent) lens and 16-megapixel sensor. While the SZ-31’s 3-inch, 920,000 dot display isn’t quite as sharp as the TG-820’s, it’s touch-sensitive and lets you focus, zoom and change settings like shutter speed with a few taps — just as well, as the camera body is otherwise suspiciously lacking in buttons. It’ll be released in April for $399.99.
