Last month we got a glimpse of a new Roku device thanks to an FCC filing, and it appears the miniature media streamer is now landing on store shelves. Zatz Not Funny found one of the devices — named simply the Roku HD — at an unnamed brick-and-mortar retailer. Priced at $58, the device offers 720p streaming, HDMI outputs, and also brings back the composite audio and video connectors that had been dropped from previous iterations of Roku’s products. It’s still not quite clear what the company’s strategy is with the new device; it has yet to appear on either Amazon or Roku’s own site, and the naming puts it at a distinct marketing disadvantage when compared to the rest of the Roku 2 line (not to mention the confusion it may create given that Roku has used the name before). Then again, if you’re in the market for a stripped-down streamer that can connect to older TVs as well as the latest flat panel, it might be just the ticket.
