Samsung’s Galaxy lineup got a little bigger today, with the company announcing two Galaxy Tab 2 models along with two new Galaxy Players. The Galaxy Tab 2 comes in 7- and 10.1-inch sizes, and the real hook is the price: the 7.0 will cost just $249.99, and the 10.1-inch model will run you $399.99. They replace the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and have only very modest spec changes: the most significant new feature is that the devices run a skinned version of Android 4.0, which is a huge improvement over Honeycomb. We played with both devices at Mobile World Congress, and while there’s nothing surprising about either one, they’re a nice upgrade from the previous versions — Samsung reps also said the company’s working on bringing Android 4.0 to the older tablets, too. The new, $199.99 Galaxy Player 4.2 joins the just-released (and reviewed!) Player 3.6 as the newest members of Samsung’s media player range. Like the various other models Samsung sells, they’re basically Galaxy S phones minus the phone parts: they run Android 2.3 plus Samsung’s Touchwiz UI skin, and feature a 1GHz processor, front and rear cameras, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There’s also a nifty Bluetooth feature built into the devices that lets them work essentially as a Bluetooth headset, routing calls from another device so you can use your phone while talking on your Galaxy Player. We got a look at this device at MWC as well, under its European moniker, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi, and generally liked what we saw — though it’s still a hard sell over an iPod touch.
The Galaxy Tab 7.0 will be available April 22nd, while the 10.1 will be out May 13th along with the Galaxy Player 4.2.
