Browser-based games are slowly but surely shaking their image of being all about matching gems and tending to crops. Take AirMech as an example: right now, you can play a 3D real-time strategy game in which your character transforms from a mech to a fighter jet. AirMech is heavily inspired by 1989’s Herzog Zwei, the game commonly credited with birthing the RTS genre, but here it is running in a Chrome tab and controlling far better with keyboard and mouse controls than it ever did on a Genesis pad. The graphical presentation is unsurprisingly more impressive, too, rendering fairly chaotic scenes smoothly on an 11-inch MacBook Air. While AirMech is still in alpha — we did see a couple of glitches upon booting — the game experience itself is pretty robust, and you can get it for free from the Chrome Web Store now.
