Livestream has just unveiled the Broadcaster: a device that can encode and stream live HD video directly to the web from nearly any camera over Wi-Fi, ethernet, or a 3G or 4G USB modem. The system supports nearly any camera that can provide it with an HDMI signal, including 1080i, 720p, and 480i resolutions, and the Broadcaster encodes the signal in real-time using H.264 and AAC audio. The device can be mounted on a tripod or connected to a camera using a hot shoe adapter. Once connected to the internet, users can control the stream through an LCD panel on the Broadcaster, or through the Livestream platform on the web.

At $495 including a three month subscription for the Livestream’s ad-free streaming platform (which is otherwise $45 monthly), it’s a little more expensive up front than products like Cerevo’s Live Shell, but the integration with Livestream and its HD streaming capabilities seem to more than make up for the difference in price. The Broadcaster is available today for pre-order in the US and Europe, and it will begin shipping in May.
