According to a new report from the Consumer Electronics Association — the same group that puts on a little trade show every year called CES — electronics recycling grew 53 percent last year. In total Americans recycled approximately 460 million pounds of old gadgets, a jump of 160 million compared to 2010. Part of the reason for this appears to be a big increase in the number of available locations for dropping off used electronics, which grew from around 5,000 in 2010 up to nearly 7,500 in 2011. This latest milestone puts the CEA on its way towards a goal set last year as part of the eCycling Leadership Initiative, which aims to reach one billion pounds of recycled electronics in 2016.
