Ubuntu’s convention of using an adjective and animal that start with the same letter to name new versions of its brand of Linux has come up against its biggest challenge yet — the letter Q. Thankfully, the team appears to be up to the task, as founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that version 12.10 of the operating system will henceforth be known as Quantal Quetzal. The “Quantal” part of the name appears to be derived from the new virtualized network Quantum that will make its debut in 12.10, while the animal portion is meant to represent the new look that users can expect. The quetzal is a colourful bird from Mexico, and Shuttleworth promises that the new version of the OS will eschew Ubuntu’s standard brown for “something colourful and light.” Of course, it will still be a while before we get to see Ubuntu’s flashy makeover — version 12.04 Precise Pangolin is set to launch later this month, while Quantal Quetzal will make its debut in October.
