We took the LG Viper for a spin at CES earlier this year, and Sprint has just announced that the Viper will be its first LTE phone, due out later this month for $99.99 on a two-year contract — and considering pre-orders start for the Viper on April 12th, the rumors of an April 15th release date are looking pretty good. The phone will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and contains a 1.2GHz dual core chip and 1GB RAM, but not the 1.5GHz OMAP 4 that was previously rumored. It’s not the flashiest way to kick off a new LTE network, but hopefully the Galaxy Nexus LTE will soon follow for Sprint customers.

Update: Or could the Galaxy Nexus LTE come first? Taking a closer look at Sprint’s press release, the LG Viper is “the first 4G LTE device with eco-friendly features,” or “the first LG device running at 4G LTE speeds” on Sprint. Those disclaimers could technically make room for the Galaxy Nexus to sneak in earlier.
