BioWare has just officially announced Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, which will “expand upon the events” of the game in order to “give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes.” BioWare’s second act comes after a promise to retool the game, in response to a profound outburst of protest from gamers over the trilogy’s ending — and the announcement clears up speculation that it might change the events of the game.

BioWare says that it thinks it struck a “good balance” between “delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision” — a balance that has provided much debate. The DLC will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this summer, and will be free until April 12th, 2014 (yes, that’s two years from now).
