You've probably never heard of design firm Teague, but it's been crafting the interiors of Boeing aircraft for over 60 years. Smithsonian magazine's Design Decoded blog looks at the history between Teague and Boeing, starting with the 1947 Boeing 377 Stratocruiser – a plane that was inspired by the spaciousness of cruise ships and featured pull-out sleeping berths. Since, the companies have sought to "reconnect people to the magic of flight" with projects like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, says Teague Vice President Ken Dowd. The expensive and oft-delayed Dreamliner project entered commercial service in October of last year, and features large, shade-less windows embedded with an electrochromic material to limit the amount of light passing through, as well as programmed LED lighting to gently transition passengers in and out of sleep.
