Early adopters of Nikon's D4 and D800 / D800E DLSRs began complaining of freezing issues shortly after the cameras hit shelves, and the company's promise of a "permanent solution" has now arrived in the form of a firmware update. Owners of each model can now download firmware version 1.01 from Nikon's website, which claims to resolve a nasty lockup issue that forced affected users to pull the camera's battery if they hoped to get shooting again.

The update also addresses a network transfer glitch in all three models that erroneously transferred RAW files in addition to the JPEG images users had chosen in settings. Additionally, the new firmware fixes a command dial bug that impacted some D4 hardware and also gets rid of a dark shadow that sometimes appeared at the bottom of D800 photos taken with Active D-Lighting enabled.
