Nokia 808 Pureview coming to US on Amazon for $699 unlocked (update)

Despite the fact that Nokia said last year that it would no longer bring any Symbian hardware to the US, the company appears to have done an about-face with the 808 Pureview, a Symbian smartphone with a 41-megapixel camera sensor. We heard last month that Nokia was investigating ways to bring the 808 Pureview to the US, and now a product page has just gone live on Nokia’s US website. The phone appears to be idenitical, spec-wise, to what Nokia previously introduced — but now US customers can sign up to be notified when the 808 Pureview is available through Amazon, unlocked, for $699. Nokia notes that the phone will work with either an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM, but only at 2G speeds on T-Mobile on account of the 808’s radio configuration. Presales from Amazon will begin later this week, but there’s no word on a ship date just yet.

Update: Nokia has updated its blog to say that the 808 Pureview will in fact run at 3G speeds on both T-Mobile and AT&T, contrary to what it said last night. Apparently, there was an error in the spec sheet, but the 808 Pureview “works just fine with T-Mobile in the United States.”
