The GSM Association, organizer of events like Mobile World Congress and Mobile Asia Expo, has announced an initiative to help wireless customers become aware of possible roaming fees when travelling outside of their coverage areas. With the support of 24 mobile operators, including AT&T, Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, China Unicom, and others, the organization will devise a system that alerts customers with detailed information about voice and data roaming tariffs while also providing tools to establish spending limits. The GSMA plans to roll out the first phase of the initiative to the supporting carriers’ 4 billion customers by the end of the 2012, with hopes to spread adoption of the system to the remainder of the association’s 800 wireless providers. Earlier this year, the GSMA took a similar approach to SMS spam, partnering with five North American carriers to develop and implement a new reporting system.
