The New York Times’ Nick Bilton just had his hands on Facebook’s brand new native app for iOS, set to launch sometime this summer. The Facebook app itself doesn’t look new, but is apparently much faster than the current app — which is often painstakingly slow. “Facebook hasn’t changed the design, but rather focused on speed,” Bilton wrote. The new app is written almost entirely in Objective-C (iOS’ native programming language) to ensure a speedy experience, whereas the old app was simply an Objective-C wrapper on Facebook’s HTML 5 mobile web page. Facebook’s official Camera app and Messenger app are frequently updated and impressively snappy; we can only hope that the official Facebook app finally catches up come this summer.
