In what may be the best timing in history, Google received approval for a patent designed to prevent theft of its Project Glass devices today. This development comes just a day after Dr. Steve Mann published a blog post detailing the attempted theft and damage of his EyeTap Digital Eye Glass, a permanently attached augmented reality device worn in a similar manner to Google’s Project Glass. The patent, filed back in September, details designs to lock the Project Glass device when unnatural movement not caused by the wearer is detected and notify authorities of the potential theft. While it won’t stop anyone from actually taking the device, the software lock will work to protect personal data and quickly alert the police.
